by Tim Gordon

Inspired by Turner Classic Movies’ beloved “Summer Under the Stars” tradition, we proudly present Summer Madness, a celebration of Black brilliance on screen.

Each day throughout August, we’ll shine the spotlight on one extraordinary Black actor, honoring their achievements, their artistry, and the unforgettable films that shaped their legacy. This series is more than a viewing guide; it’s a journey through decades of cinematic history, paying tribute to the trailblazers, icons, and storytellers who transformed the screen and continue to inspire the world.

Regina King

Regina King has grown from sitcom sweetheart to one of Hollywood’s most respected and versatile powerhouses. She first charmed audiences as Brenda Jenkins on 227, but her ambition and talent soon took her far beyond the world of network sitcoms.

King’s breakthrough came with roles like the fiercely loyal wife in Jerry Maguire (1996) and the scene-stealing best friend in Miss Congeniality 2. But she truly came into her own in the 2000s, showing a fearless range that spanned drama, comedy, and voice work (she famously voiced both Huey and Riley on The Boondocks).

Her Oscar-winning performance in If Beale Street Could Talk (2018) is a masterclass in quiet strength — a mother’s love expressed through understated power. And when she stepped behind the camera to direct One Night in Miami… (2020), she proved that her influence wasn’t just in front of the lens. King is an artist in the truest sense — shaping stories, commanding performances, and raising the bar for what’s possible.
