From Snowfall to The Drop

The Snowfall Story

Before The Drop, there was Snowfall.

Set primarily during the 1980s, Snowfall chronicled the arrival of crack cocaine in South Central Los Angeles through the rise and fall of Franklin Saint.

Franklin began as an intelligent and ambitious young man looking for a way to escape the economic limitations surrounding him. What started as an opportunity became an empire as Franklin built an increasingly powerful drug organization alongside family members and childhood friends.

But Franklin’s business was never operating in isolation.

His relationship with CIA operative Teddy McDonald connected the streets of South Central to a much larger political story, revealing how international interests, government power and the drug trade collided while communities like Franklin’s absorbed the consequences.

Across six seasons, the money grew.

So did the cost.

Snowfall | The Rise of Franklin Saint

Franklin’s earliest success appeared to offer everything he wanted: independence, wealth and control over his own future.

But the larger his organization became, the more people were pulled into its orbit.

His uncle Jerome Saint and aunt Louie became central players in the business.

His mother Cissy Saint became increasingly entangled in the consequences of her son’s decisions.

And his childhood friend Leon Simmons became one of Franklin’s most trusted soldiers.

What Franklin built eventually transformed not only his family but the neighborhood surrounding them.

Snowfall | The Cost of the Empire

The crack epidemic didn’t simply create wealth for Franklin.

It devastated people around him.

Few characters demonstrated that more powerfully than Wanda Bell.

Wanda’s descent into addiction transformed her from someone adjacent to the drug trade into one of its casualties. Her struggle exposed the human cost hidden beneath Franklin’s growing operation.

But Wanda’s story didn’t end with addiction.

She recovered.

She rebuilt herself.

And eventually, she and Leon began imagining a life beyond the streets that had shaped them.

At the same time, Leon increasingly struggled with his own role in what had happened to their community.

The money no longer looked the same once he understood its price.

Snowfall | The Fall of Franklin Saint

By the final season, Franklin’s empire was collapsing.

His family was fractured.

Jerome was dead.

Louie was gone.

His partnership with Teddy had become a war.

Cissy was imprisoned after killing Teddy.

And Franklin’s increasingly desperate effort to recover the fortune Teddy had taken from him destroyed nearly every relationship he had left.

Leon ultimately refused to give Franklin the money he wanted, recognizing that saving his friend might require refusing to finance his destruction.

The final chapter left Franklin walking through the same neighborhood he once controlled, stripped of the empire he had sacrificed almost everything to build.

But the neighborhood remained.

So did Leon.

So did Wanda.

And their story wasn’t over.

Wanda and Leon | The Bridge Between Two Eras

Wanda and Leon aren’t simply returning characters.

They are the connective tissue between Snowfall and The Drop.

Both carry different scars from the original series.

Wanda experienced the crack epidemic as someone nearly destroyed by addiction before fighting her way back.

Leon helped distribute the product before becoming increasingly horrified by what the drug economy was doing to the people around him.

Their journey eventually took them to Ghana, offering both a glimpse of a life beyond the world Franklin had built.

Now The Drop brings them into another transformative period in Los Angeles.

This time, the opportunity isn’t crack.

It’s music.

Beyond the Episode

Go beyond the music with deeper analysis of the choices, consequences, relationships and cultural forces shaping The Drop: A Snowfall Saga.

Beyond the Episode examines what each chapter reveals about Wanda, Leon and the new generation while exploring how the series builds upon the themes established throughout Snowfall.

Family Matters | Season 1, Episode 3

Lamar’s creative instincts collide with the realities of the music business as Wanda learns that recognizing talent and managing it are two very different things. While Lamar fights to control his music, James is forced to reconsider his own future when Big Daddy asks him to become his younger brother’s protector, raising a larger question about when protecting family becomes controlling their choices.

Themes & Analysis

From the Dope Game to the Rap Game

The transition from Snowfall to The Drop isn’t simply a change of setting.

It’s a change in economy.

Snowfall examined how crack created an underground marketplace capable of transforming South Central Los Angeles.

The Drop enters a period when hip-hop is becoming another enormously valuable product emerging from many of those same communities.

The product has changed.

The question of who controls it remains.

Black Ambition and Ownership

Franklin Saint wanted ownership because he believed economic power could give him freedom.

Wanda enters The Drop with her own desire to control her future.

But her history makes that ambition fundamentally different.

She has already experienced what happens when someone else’s pursuit of wealth turns people into collateral damage.

The series now has an opportunity to explore whether ambition can produce independence without repeating the destruction that preceded it.

Art, Culture and Exploitation

Hip-hop emerged as a way for communities to tell their own stories.

As the music grew, those stories also became extraordinarily valuable commodities.

The Drop enters the moment when culture and commerce increasingly collide, creating opportunities for artists while attracting executives, entrepreneurs and others eager to profit from their success.

That tension between artistic expression and economic exploitation could become one of the series’ defining conflicts.

Survival and Second Chances

Wanda and Leon enter The Drop carrying something many characters in Snowfall never received:

a second chance.

But surviving the past doesn’t erase it.

Wanda’s addiction and recovery remain part of who she is.

Leon’s participation in Franklin’s empire remains part of who he is.

Their challenge isn’t simply to move forward.

It’s figuring out how to build something new without allowing the past to determine what comes next.

The Cost of Success

Snowfall repeatedly challenged the idea that wealth automatically equals freedom.

Franklin gained money, influence and power while gradually losing nearly everything that once gave those things meaning.

The Drop can revisit that question from another direction.

What happens when success arrives through music rather than drugs?

Who owns the work?

Who controls the money?

And how much does someone have to surrender before success becomes another kind of trap?

The Drop explores the generation that remained, the community that survived and the culture emerging from a city permanently changed by the decade that came before.

From Snowfall to The Drop

The connection between the two series isn’t merely Wanda and Leon.

It’s Los Angeles itself.

Snowfall examined what happened when an illicit economy transformed South Central.

The Drop asks what happens next, as music becomes another path toward money, influence, ownership and power.
