Inspired by Turner Classic Movies’ beloved “Summer Under the Stars” tradition, we proudly present Summer Madness, a celebration of Black brilliance on screen.
Each day throughout August, we’ll shine the spotlight on one extraordinary Black actor, honoring their achievements, their artistry, and the unforgettable films that shaped their legacy. This series is more than a viewing guide; it’s a journey through decades of cinematic history, paying tribute to the trailblazers, icons, and storytellers who transformed the screen and continue to inspire.
Eddie Murphy
Eddie Murphy didn’t just become a star — he redefined what stardom could look like. When he joined Saturday Night Live at just 19, he electrified the show, becoming a cultural phenomenon with characters that still resonate decades later.
Hollywood came calling, and Murphy exploded onto the big screen in 48 Hrs. (1982) and Trading Places (1983). His combination of swagger, speed, and comic brilliance made him a box office juggernaut. In the ’80s and ’90s, he dominated, creating beloved franchises (Beverly Hills Cop), iconic characters (Coming to America, The Nutty Professor), and unforgettable stand-up specials.
But Murphy is more than comedy. His dramatic turn in Dreamgirls (2006) reminded audiences that his talent isn’t just for laughs. He’s a shape-shifter, a mogul, and one of the most influential entertainers of all time.
