A New Threat Emerges
by Charles Kirkland, Jr.
The Season 2 premiere of The Night Manager reintroduces viewers to a world where the past never stays buried and old ghosts have a way of resurfacing with devastating consequences. Episode 1 establishes a tense, methodical return to the series’ espionage roots, setting the stage for a new threat born from the legacy of Richard Roper.
Jonathan Pine’s New Life as Alex Goodwin
Nearly ten years after the capture of Richard Roper (Hugh Laurie), and almost six years since Angela Burr (Olivia Colman) confirmed his execution, Jonathan Pine (Tom Hiddleston) lives under a new identity. Now known as Alex Goodwin, Pine serves as the head of the Night Owl Project, a government-sanctioned MI6 surveillance unit responsible for dismantling global criminal networks.
To his peers, Goodwin is a model intelligence officer. Privately, the weight of his past mission continues to haunt him, a moral reckoning that never truly resolved itself.
A Ghost from Roper’s Past
That reckoning comes rushing back during a routine surveillance operation when Alex spots Jaco Brouwer, a former lieutenant of Roper’s. Shaken, Alex reports the sighting to his supervisor, Rex Mayhew (Douglas Hodge), the only man who knows the truth about Pine’s identity. Rex dismisses the concern, insisting Pine is dead and that the past should remain buried.
When Alex suggests contacting Angela Burr, now retired and living in France, Rex shuts the idea down. Before ending their conversation, however, Rex quietly hands Alex an untraceable phone number, a gesture that hints at deeper unease.
Unauthorized Surveillance and a Deadly Discovery
Ignoring direct orders, Alex instructs the Night Owl team to initiate unauthorized surveillance on Brouwer. The investigation reveals Brouwer acquiring arms for a man claiming to be the true heir to Richard Roper’s empire. Alarmed, Alex contacts Rex using the secret number. Rex insists they meet the next day, claiming he has uncovered something significant of his own.
Rex never arrives.
A Suspicious Death and a New Conspiracy
Alex receives a call from Celia Mayhew (Annabel Mullion), informing him that Rex has been found dead in his shed, his death ruled an apparent suicide. Doubting the official explanation, Alex searches the house and discovers the phone tied to the secret number. It contains only one contact, labeled “Broker,” along with documents and photos implicating Night Owl’s current manager, Mayra Cavendish (Indira Varma), in arms dealings tied to international trafficker Teddy dos Santos.
The Broker and the Trap
Alex identifies the Broker as Roxana Bolaños (Camila Morrone), a Colombian intermediary involved in pipeline component deals connected to dos Santos. Fearing for her safety, Alex places Roxana under Night Owl protection in a secure hotel, withholding his true identity.
The team tracks Brouwer to another hotel, bugs his person, and establishes surveillance. During a tense meeting, Teddy exposes the bug and violently turns on Brouwer, crushing the device underfoot.
A Catastrophic Ending
As the signal disappears, Sally Price-Jones (Hayley Squires) alerts Alex, who orders an immediate retreat. Attempts to contact team members fail. Racing through the hotel, Alex discovers his operatives murdered. In Teddy’s room, he finds Brouwer unconscious, strapped into an explosive vest.
Alex escapes moments before a massive explosion rips through the hotel. Teddy dos Santos is last seen calmly driving away, leaving devastation in his wake.
Final Thoughts
Season 2 of The Night Manager opens with calculated tension, emotional continuity, and a chilling reminder that dismantling an empire does not eliminate its ideology. Episode 1 firmly reestablishes the series’ moral stakes while positioning Jonathan Pine for another dangerous descent into the shadows.
