James T. Kirk arrives aboard the Enterprise for what he claims is a routine physical with Dr. M’Benga.
There is another reason for his visit.
Kirk wants to reconnect with La’An Noonien-Singh, and she makes it clear that the feeling is mutual.
Their reunion is interrupted by a much larger development.
Pike, Una, Christine Chapel, Uhura and a landing party are investigating an SOS signal on the surface of a planet. Their search takes them beyond communications range just as another shuttle approaches the Enterprise carrying one of Starfleet’s most celebrated officers.
