Reel Reviews | The Bling Ring

Two men in conversation on a baseball field during sunset.

On the latest episode of Reel Shorts, writer/director Sophia Coppola’s The Bling Ring tells the story of a group of fame-obsessed teenagers who use the internet to track celebrities’ whereabouts in order to rob their homes.

While the vacuous and spoiled teens’ story is ugly, Coppola’s film elicits much-needed emotion and simultaneously channeling the angst of “generation me” in this tale. Unlike two earlier “stupid criminal” films, Pain and Gain and Spring Breakers, The Bling Ring shows that not only doesn’t crime pay but if you’re truly unlucky, some filmmaker will probably show your stupidity in a theater near you.

The Bling Ring stars newcomers Katie Chang, Israel Broussard, and Claire Julien, as well as Emma Watson and Taissa Farmiga.
