A childhood lesson about difference collides with present-day betrayal as Simon Williams’ carefully controlled world detonates under the weight of truth in Episode 7 of Wonder Man, titled “Kathy Friedman.”
A Lesson in Difference
The episode opens in the past. Sanford Williams drops his sons off at school, reminding Eric about football practice before turning his attention to Simon. Sensing an opportunity, Sanford pretends to hear Simon cough and suggests he take the day off. Simon obliges with an exaggerated cough.
Instead of school, Sanford takes Simon to The Eagle to see Wonder Man, a film Sanford recalls watching when he first arrived in the United States. The effects may be dated, he admits, but the story still holds up.
Inside the theater, Sanford reveals the real reason for their outing. Simon was involved in a fight at school the day before. Simon insists the other kids started it, something Sanford already knows. He explains that children can be cruel to anyone who is different, but that “different” can also be extraordinary. The moment quietly reshapes how Simon understands himself.
Fame Changes Everything
In the present, Simon prepares for work with the same obsessive ritual once seen during his American Horror Story days, but everything else has changed. He is chauffeured instead of walking. Food is delivered on command. His creative input now carries weight with writers and directors.
When Simon’s instincts threaten to overwhelm the production, Trevor steps in to steady him. Trevor has become Simon’s emotional anchor, even eclipsing the carefully managed strategies of Janelle’s team as they guide Simon Williams’ rapid ascent.
Enter Kathy Friedman
Janelle soon introduces a complication. Kathy Friedman of The New York Times wants to profile Simon and Trevor. Trevor is thrilled. Simon is immediately alarmed. He knows Kathy’s reputation for precision and persistence and fears she will uncover his secret.
Trevor encourages him to relax and offers simple advice: use people’s names. It disarms them.
When Kathy (Lauren Weedman) arrives on set the next day, Simon takes the advice too far, repeatedly using her name until it becomes uncomfortable. Kathy tells him to ignore her entirely, which only intensifies his fixation. Trevor’s arrival shifts the tone. His charm eases the tension.
Before leaving, Kathy asks for personal references. Both men hesitate until she mentions Vivian and says she will contact her directly. With no better option, Simon agrees.
Vivian Knows the Truth
Later, Simon meets Vivian at a bar. She jokingly acknowledges why he called. They catch up. She now has Severance. He has Wonder Man. Simon apologizes for the past and admits he struggles with relationships.
Vivian reveals that she has always known his secret. She never pressured him, waiting for him to share when he was ready. She hopes he will someday trust someone enough to be fully himself.
The Interview Turns
Just before Simon and Trevor sit down with Kathy, Simon receives a call from his mother, Martha. She has already spoken to Kathy and casually mentions that Kathy also spoke to Eric.
Simon panics, convinced his brother sabotaged him. Trevor calms him with box breathing and urges patience.
During the interview, Simon begins explaining his complicated relationship with Eric, only for Kathy to interrupt. Eric, she reveals, spoke glowingly of Simon, praising his work ethic and expressing pride.
The focus then shifts to Trevor.
Kathy presents footage of Trevor being arrested upon returning to the United States and presses him on how a convicted felon who never completed his sentence is now working freely on a major production. Did he cut a deal with the government?
Offended and exposed, Trevor storms out. Simon absorbs every word.
Betrayal and Collapse
Backstage, Simon confronts Trevor. Trevor admits the truth. He has been cooperating with Damage Control and feeding them information. He insists there is a way out but admits he does not have a plan.
Simon coldly compliments Trevor on his “great performance” and walks away.
As Simon storms through the studio, his emotions erupt. The ground shakes. Equipment crashes. With a scream, Simon unleashes a catastrophic blast that rips through the building.
In the distance, Kathy Friedman stops, turns, and stares at the destruction.
Closing Thoughts
The secret is out. Simon does not want to hurt Trevor, but the betrayal cuts deeply. With the set destroyed and questions mounting, the future of the film and Simon’s career hangs in the balance. Will Kathy uncover the full truth? And once exposed, is there any path back for Wonder Man?
