As the Toronto International Film Festival prepares to celebrate its 50th edition this September, it’s pulling no punches with the first wave of Special Presentations, a compelling lineup of five World Premieres that exemplify the Festival’s legacy of bold storytelling, global vision, and artistic excellence.
Unveiled today, the five titles hail from a powerful mix of voices and cinematic traditions ranging from acclaimed auteurs like Steven Soderbergh, Alejandro Amenábar, and Nia DaCosta, to rising Canadian filmmaker Chandler Levack, whose Mile End Kicks opens the Special Presentations programme. The diverse lineup spans genres and continents, setting the tone for a historic year at TIFF.
“These first five films of our Official Selection reflect the innovation, heart, and global perspective that have made our Festival a home for great cinema over the past 50 editions,” said Cameron Bailey, CEO of TIFF. “We’re especially excited to spotlight Chandler Levack, a Canadian filmmaker whose roots run deep with TIFF, alongside a lineup of internationally celebrated directors.”

The TIFF alum (I Like Movies, TIFF ’22) opens Special Presentations with this coming-of-age story set in Montréal’s indie music scene, signaling a confident and personal new chapter in Levack’s career.
A Cinematic Milestone
These five premieres lead the charge for what is shaping up to be a landmark edition of TIFF, running September 4–14, 2025. The Festival will once again light up its signature venues TIFF Bell Lightbox, Roy Thomson Hall, Princess of Wales Theatre, and more alongside events like In Conversation With…, the Industry Conference (Sept. 5–9), and the fan-favorite Festival Street, returning to King Street West for opening weekend festivities.
Also new this year: the debut of the International People’s Choice Award, complementing TIFF’s long-running People’s Choice Award, along with the Platform Award (now in its 10th year), and jury prizes from FIPRESCI and NETPAC.
