A couple holding hands at a formal event.

Nicholas Stoller (Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Bros) returns to familiar rom-com territory with You’re Cordially Invited, a star-driven wedding comedy starring Will Ferrell and Reese Witherspoon.

On paper, it’s the kind of high-concept setup Stoller can usually spin into something sharp and chaotic: two wedding parties, one Southern, one Hollywood, accidentally double-book the same quaint inn on a picturesque Georgia island. The stage is set for clashing families, awkward revelations, and inevitable lessons about letting go and embracing life’s messiness.

Ferrell plays Jim Caldwell, an overprotective Atlanta widower determined to recreate the magic of his late wife’s wedding day for his daughter, only to find himself out of place among her Gen Z friends. Witherspoon is Margot Buckley, a tightly wound LA reality TV producer who wants her free-spirited sister’s big day to be perfect, even as she hides a secret pregnancy from their judgmental mother. When the inn’s owner dies before finalizing the bookings, the two families collide for a weekend of forced compromises and passive-aggressive wedding planning.

It’s classic Stoller in theory: big personalities stuck together in close quarters should spark plenty of sharp dialogue and escalating absurdity. But instead of leaning into its farcical potential, the film coasted on its two leads and a handful of mild chuckles. Ferrell’s clueless dad shtick grows stale fast, and Witherspoon’s uptight control freak never quite clicks into someone we can root for. Supporting characters, like the eccentric sister and the swarm of influencer wedding guests, feel like sketches rather than real people.

Some moments hint at what could’ve been, watching Ferrell flail through boho wedding trends, or Witherspoon clash with her overbearing mother, but they’re too scattered to carry the film. By the time both parties agree to split the dock at sunset, the big conflict has fizzled out, and the resolution feels less heartfelt than obligatory.

If you’re craving a light distraction with pretty scenery and two A-listers coasting on their familiar charm, You’re Cordially Invited might do the trick for a lazy streaming night. Just don’t expect a wedding you’ll want to RSVP to again. There are times when actors make movies so forgettable they’d rather pretend they never happened — this is one both stars will likely deny over time.
