Tranqlara Comes With a Warning

The episode opens with Jerry O’Connell appearing in an informational commercial for Tranqlara.

Meanwhile, Woodrow learns that the assassins sent to Neagley’s apartment failed to observe the drug’s effects because Jerry’s death interrupted their operation.

Woodrow isn’t pleased.

His boss wanted everything handled quietly, and Neagley ending up on the front page would create exactly the attention they don’t need.

Unfortunately for Frances, she’s already consumed the contaminated milk.

Neagley Realizes She’s Been Drugged

At Hudson’s house, Neagley, Renee and Hudson try to determine what happened to Jerry.

Neagley believes someone was waiting for her and killed Jerry instead.

Renee has made another discovery.

Construction plans reveal a missile silo beneath Echo Canyon’s barn, providing the perfect hidden facility for illegal drug testing. Echo Canyon also supplies vulnerable people whose disappearances are unlikely to attract attention.

Then Neagley becomes light-headed.

At first, she blames the cereal.

The Neagley Season 1 Episode 5 Recap quickly reveals the real problem.

Tranqlara has begun working.

Neagley rushes into the bathroom and vomits, but it’s too late. When Hudson breaks down the door, she’s already escaped through the window.

Tranqlara Opens the Door

The Tranqlara commercial explains what is happening.

The drug targets the amygdala, bringing traumatic memories to the surface so patients can confront them.

It is supposed to be administered in a safe, controlled environment.

Neagley is wandering through Chicago alone.

She eventually reaches her father’s home.

Then she sees herself as a child.

Young Frances walks toward the basement of their apartment complex, and Neagley follows.

What she sees is horrifying.

Her father punches a man while two others restrain him.

Then he repeatedly stabs the man to death.

Whatever memory Frances has buried, Tranqlara has just ripped open the door.

The Killers Find Neagley

Disoriented, Neagley stumbles back into the street.

The assassins spot her.

They accelerate toward Frances, intending to finish what the drug started.

Hudson arrives at the last possible moment and tackles Neagley out of the vehicle’s path.

The killers escape.

The Neagley Season 1 Episode 5 Recap has turned Frances’ greatest vulnerability into something her enemies are actively trying to exploit.

Kino Climbs Out of Hell

At the burn pit, Kino remains trapped beneath bags containing human remains.

The men preparing to destroy the bodies have temporarily left to get propane.

Kino improvises.

He stacks the bags into a makeshift ladder and climbs toward freedom.

His first attempt fails.

Then the men return.

As flames ignite beneath him, Kino tries again.

This time, he reaches the edge.

Kino pulls himself out and runs into the woods.

He has survived Echo Canyon’s disposal operation, but he still has no physical evidence of what he witnessed.

Woodrow Is Running Out of Time

The Tranqlara commercial returns as Woodrow presents the drug to his board.

He promises a 60-second commercial for the Super Bowl and announces plans to begin human testing at the start of the year.

The board isn’t impressed.

After four years without results, they’re finished writing checks.

If Woodrow misses the January deadline, they’ll audit the operation and remove him.

Afterward, Woodrow receives a call from another man who reminds him that his enterprise is essential to Woodrow’s success.

Once again, the series makes clear that Woodrow isn’t operating alone.

The Rye Flour Finally Makes Sense

Renee solves one of Tommie’s strangest clues.

Rye flour can be used in the production of LSD.

Tommie wasn’t sending Neagley something meaningless.

He was pointing her toward the drug operation.

Renee also discovers something even bigger.

Pierce Woodrow leads the pharmaceutical company behind Tranqlara.

The Neagley Season 1 Episode 5 Recap finally connects Tommie’s rye flour, Echo Canyon’s experiments, Tranqlara and Woodrow into the same conspiracy.

Neagley’s Childhood Memory Returns

Hudson tries to comfort Frances as she blames herself for Jerry’s death.

Then he reaches for his phone.

Neagley recoils.

“Don’t touch me!”

Another memory surfaces.

She sees her father yelling at her as a child.

Never let anyone touch you.

Her aversion to physical contact isn’t simply a personality trait.

It appears connected to something buried in her childhood.

But exactly what happened, and why her father refuses to discuss it, remains unresolved.

Kino Refuses to Leave Mandy

Kino contacts Renee and explains what happened at the burn pit.

There’s one problem.

He has no photographs.

No physical evidence.

Nothing that proves what Echo Canyon is doing.

Renee tells him his undercover operation is over.

Kino refuses.

He isn’t leaving without Mandy.

He learns from Judith that Mandy has already been sent to the project at a sister church.

Time is running out.

Neagley Season 1 Episode 5 Ending Explained

The final moments of the Neagley Season 1 Episode 5 Recap turn Frances from target back into hunter.

Woodrow’s people drugged her.

Tranqlara invaded the most deeply buried part of her memory.

Jerry is apparently dead because someone entered her apartment intending to get to her.

And now Neagley knows who’s behind the pharmaceutical operation.

Hudson asks what they should do next.

Frances already knows.

Woodrow got inside her head.

Now she’s getting inside his.

Later, Woodrow walks through a parking garage toward his car.

Neagley emerges from the shadows.

She covers his mouth with a cloth.

And knocks him unconscious.

The Bottom Line

Neagley Season 1 Episode 5 Recap gives “Trip” two meanings.

Tranqlara sends Frances on a terrifying journey into a childhood memory she has apparently spent years suppressing, while the investigation finally takes the team directly to Pierce Woodrow.

Tommie’s rye flour clue now makes sense. Echo Canyon provides human subjects. The missile silo provides the laboratory. Tranqlara provides the motive. And Woodrow connects the pieces.

But the episode’s most important mystery may now belong entirely to Frances.

What happened to Neagley when she was a child?

Her father knows more than he’s willing to tell her.

For the moment, Frances has another problem to solve.

Pierce Woodrow is finally in her hands.

And something tells us this isn’t going to be a polite interview.

Neagley Season 1 is streaming on Prime Video.
