Echo Canyon Breaks Owen
One year earlier, Owen is strapped to a chair as a technician administers a drug.
Almost immediately, he’s transported back to Afghanistan.
Owen relives his team entering a building moments before it explodes. As he screams, the technician reports that activity in his frontal cortex has dropped to 50 percent.
Lawrence describes the result more bluntly.
They’ve essentially given Owen a chemical lobotomy.
Whatever Woodrow and Lawrence are attempting to accomplish, the human cost of their experiments is becoming impossible to hide.
Kino Stays Inside Echo Canyon
Back in the present, Kino tells Renee and Neagley about the disturbed man he saw emerge from beneath the barn.
He’s shaken and wants answers.
Neagley tells him to stay inside and discover what’s beneath the barn. Renee offers considerably more reassurance and promises they’ll remain in contact.
Meanwhile, Renee discovers that Davos served in the 78th Division.
Neagley wants every surviving member located.
Hudson has another concern.
Whoever they’re investigating has access to the police.
He tells Renee to arm herself.
Someone Breaks Into Neagley’s Apartment
While Neagley and Hudson plan their next move, a man and woman dressed in black enter her apartment.
They aren’t searching for information.
They’re preparing a trap.
The Neagley Season 1 Episode 4 Recap makes that threat especially chilling because Frances has no idea her own home has become part of the conspiracy.
The pair tamper with Neagley’s toiletries and food before using an eyedropper to place something into her milk.
It’s the same delivery method used during Owen’s treatment.
Then Jerry York arrives.
He knocks on Neagley’s door, unaware of who’s waiting inside.
The intruders drag him into the apartment.
Neagley Breaks Into the Deputy Chief’s House
Neagley believes the deputy chief is dirty.
Hudson returns to the precinct to keep him occupied while Neagley enters his home, plants a listening device beneath his desk and searches for evidence.
She finds a financial ledger.
Then she meets the security system.
A Doberman.
At the precinct, Hudson confronts Murphy about killing Davos. Murphy insists the shooting was justified, but Hudson knows Davos was too heavily drugged to reach for a weapon.
Then Hudson realizes the deputy chief has disappeared.
He warns Neagley.
Too late.
The deputy chief arrives home, discovers evidence of an intruder and begins firing into the ceiling after realizing Neagley is hiding in the attic.
She crashes through a window, rolls across the roof and escapes.
The Neagley Season 1 Episode 4 Recap leaves little doubt that the police corruption surrounding Echo Canyon reaches higher than Murphy.
Neagley Finds Another Clue About Herself
Neagley brings the financial ledger to her father.
He examines the investments and concludes that the deputy chief must have access to inside information.
But Neagley found something else in the house.
Her first-grade report card.
A teacher noted concerns about young Frances’s aversion to being touched.
Neagley presses her father about what happened to her.
He refuses to discuss it.
The mystery surrounding Echo Canyon isn’t the only buried history Frances is trying to uncover.
Tommie Was Recording Echo Canyon
Inside the compound, Kino gets closer to Mandy, a young woman undergoing Echo Canyon’s treatment.
When he mentions Tommie, Mandy reveals something important.
Tommie had been caught with a camera.
He was recording what was happening at Echo Canyon.
That gives Kino another clue about why Tommie became a threat.
Judith interrupts and tells Mandy that Lawrence wants her at that evening’s Community meeting.
Mandy believes she may finally be promoted.
Kino isn’t nearly as excited.
Patient 42 Is a Wash
Renee locates Owen Vock, the last surviving member of Davos’s 78th Division.
He’s confined to a mental health facility.
Neagley and Hudson visit him and ask about Echo Canyon.
Owen initially refuses to cooperate until Hudson discovers a cabinet filled with doll parts.
Then Owen begins talking.
He went into the project hoping to be fixed.
Instead, they broke him.
Owen repeatedly says:
“Patient 42 is a wash.”
Neagley realizes Owen is Patient 42.
The Neagley Season 1 Episode 4 Recap finally connects Echo Canyon’s project directly to human experimentation and the devastating consequences of failure.
Mandy Joins the Project
At Community, Lawrence publicly confronts Mandy for giving Kino advice.
Nothing, he tells her, is more important than Community.
Then he orders Mandy to hold onto a chair.
Lawrence brutally beats her with a paddle.
Kino moves toward her, but before he can intervene, the punishment ends.
Then Lawrence announces that Mandy has been accepted into the project.
She is thrilled.
Kino knows enough to understand what that invitation really means.
He calls Renee and asks to be extracted.
But he’s not leaving without Mandy.
Kino Discovers the Bodies
Kino returns to the barn and tries to access the hidden elevator.
A truck arrives before he can get inside.
He watches two men load heavy duffel bags into the vehicle.
When they descend again, Kino climbs into the truck and opens one.
Inside are severed human remains.
Heads.
Arms.
Legs.
Feet.
Kino barely has time to hide beneath the bags before the men return.
The truck drives away with Kino buried among the remains.
Whatever Echo Canyon calls “the project,” its failures aren’t merely being hidden.
They’re being disposed of.
Neagley Finds Jerry’s Blood
Neagley returns home and immediately notices something wrong.
There’s blood on the end of her paper towel roll.
She retrieves a UV light.
The apartment lights up.
Someone cleaned an enormous amount of blood from the floor.
Neagley calls Renee.
She believes Jerry is dead.
But the people responsible left something behind that she hasn’t discovered.
The contaminated milk.
Neagley Season 1 Episode 4 Ending Explained
The Neagley Season 1 Episode 4 Recap ends with both Neagley and Kino walking directly into danger.
Kino is trapped inside a truck filled with dismembered bodies, having finally discovered what Echo Canyon does with at least some of the people who don’t survive the project.
Neagley has uncovered evidence that Jerry was likely attacked inside her apartment.
But she doesn’t realize the intruders weren’t there only for him.
They poisoned her food.
Remembering that she came home to eat, Neagley pours herself some cereal, adds the contaminated milk and heads toward Hudson’s house.
Inside the elevator, she raises the cup.
And drinks.
The Bottom Line
Neagley Season 1 Episode 4 Recap brings the season to its midpoint by connecting several mysteries that have been developing since “L Train.”
Tommie wasn’t merely suspicious of Echo Canyon. He was documenting it.
Owen confirms that the project uses human subjects and can leave them psychologically devastated. Kino discovers that bodies are being dismembered and removed from the compound. The deputy chief’s financial records strengthen Neagley’s suspicions of police corruption.
And someone has now brought the conspiracy directly into Neagley’s home.
“Breaking & Entering” ends with Frances doing something she rarely does.
Making a mistake without realizing it.
She drinks the milk.
Now we’ll find out what Echo Canyon’s drug does to Neagley.
