Woodrow Finds Echo Canyon
One year earlier, Lawrence Cole stands outside a grocery store promoting Echo Canyon when Pierce Woodrow approaches him.
Woodrow offers Lawrence $100 to have lunch.
Over the meal, Woodrow reveals that he knows about Lawrence’s history and failures. Yet he’s interested in supporting him for one important reason.
Lawrence owns land Woodrow needs.
That meeting appears to be the beginning of the partnership now hiding behind Echo Canyon.
Davos Takes His Shot
Back in the present, Davos has Neagley in his rifle sights.
She spots him.
Neagley shouts for Hudson to get down, retrieves her sniper rifle and shoots Davos in the shoulder before he can fire.
Davos escapes, but leaves behind a field dressing.
Neagley immediately recognizes the work.
Someone with military training treated him.
The Neagley Season 1 Episode 3 Recap has given Neagley another clue that the operation surrounding Echo Canyon is far more sophisticated than Lawrence’s followers suggest.
Kino Gets Welcomed to the Family
Inside Echo Canyon, Lawrence places three objects in front of Kino:
A gun.
Drain cleaner.
A knife.
He tells Kino to choose how he wants to die.
When Kino refuses, Lawrence points the gun at him and pulls the trigger.
Click.
It’s empty.
Lawrence tells Kino to remember how grateful he feels to be alive.
Then he welcomes him to the family.
Later, Judith and Mason search Kino and confiscate his phone along with a cigarette pack containing a needle.
Strike one.
Kino may be inside, but communicating with Neagley just became considerably harder.
Why Are the Police Interested in Neagley?
Neagley and Hudson return to the shooting scene when the deputy chief unexpectedly arrives.
Neagley immediately finds that suspicious.
There isn’t even a body.
Why would someone that high in the department care?
The deputy chief orders Hudson to take Neagley downtown for questioning and confiscates her weapon.
Neagley isn’t interested in waiting while Davos disappears.
When Hudson stops in traffic, she runs.
Echo Canyon’s Experiments Are Failing
At Echo Canyon, Lawrence and Woodrow observe a man attempting to recount a memory.
After 30 minutes, the subject begins deteriorating.
Woodrow calls the experiment another failure.
After four years and 91 iterations, they’re still unable to achieve the result they want, and their funding is becoming vulnerable.
Then Woodrow learns that Davos failed to kill Neagley.
Whatever they’re developing at Echo Canyon, Frances is now threatening more than their secrecy.
She’s threatening the entire operation.
Neagley Hunts Davos
Neagley retrieves another gun while Renee warns her that police are searching for her.
At the office, Officer Murphy questions Jerry about Neagley’s whereabouts. Jerry gives him nothing and warns Renee that the police are bad news.
Neagley asks Renee to search for doctors with suspended or endangered medical licenses who might secretly treat Davos’s gunshot wound.
They narrow the possibilities with some reluctant help from Nicky, who demands a wonderfully petty price from Hudson.
Hudson must finally admit to his mother that he, not Nicky, broke a window years ago.
Confession made.
Nicky gives them the doctor’s name.
Davos Reveals Who Killed Tommie
Neagley and Hudson find Davos sedated and strapped to a chair at the doctor’s office.
Neagley gives him a little more medication to loosen his tongue.
It works.
Lawrence Cole ordered Tommie Davis’s murder.
For the first time, the Neagley Season 1 Episode 3 Recap gives Frances direct confirmation that Tommie’s death was not an accident.
But before Davos can reveal more, Murphy arrives and takes over.
Outside, Neagley and Hudson hear gunshots.
Murphy has killed Davos.
He claims Davos was reaching for a weapon.
The man who could have told Neagley why Tommie was murdered is suddenly dead.
Someone Above Woodrow Is Calling the Shots
Back at Echo Canyon, Woodrow receives another call about Neagley.
He tries to explain what has happened.
The person on the other end isn’t interested in explanations.
He’s sending a team.
That changes the scale of the conspiracy.
Lawrence isn’t at the top.
And apparently, neither is Woodrow.
Kino Finds What Echo Canyon Is Hiding
Kino’s undercover investigation takes him into the barn, where he discovers a hidden opening rising from the floor.
He hides as a naked man emerges from an elevator.
The man is clearly disoriented.
Kino approaches and tries to understand what happened to him.
The man insists he’s fine.
Then he decides to prove it.
He pulls out a hammer.
And brings it down on himself.
Neagley Season 1 Episode 3 Ending Explained
The final scene of the Neagley Season 1 Episode 3 Recap provides the clearest evidence yet that Echo Canyon isn’t simply a cult.
People are being taken somewhere beneath the compound and subjected to experiments connected to memory and behavior.
Earlier, Woodrow revealed that the project has gone through 91 unsuccessful iterations over four years. Now Kino has encountered one of the human beings who came back.
And the results are horrifying.
Meanwhile, Davos’s confession confirms Lawrence ordered Tommie’s murder, while Murphy’s killing of Davos suggests someone inside law enforcement may be protecting the conspiracy.
Most importantly, the mysterious person above Woodrow is no longer willing to leave Neagley to Lawrence.
A team is coming.
The Bottom Line
Neagley Season 1 Episode 3 Recap moves the season beyond the question of whether Echo Canyon is hiding something.
Now we’re beginning to understand what it’s hiding.
Tommie discovered enough to get himself killed. Lawrence is overseeing human experimentation. Woodrow has spent years pursuing a project that still doesn’t work. Police involvement may be protecting the operation, and someone above all of them has decided Frances Neagley has become too dangerous to ignore.
But “Hammer Time” also gives Neagley what she’s been searching for since “L Train.”
Confirmation.
Lawrence Cole had Tommie murdered.
Now she needs to find out why.
