Neagley Season 1 Episode 2 Recap – Detective Hudson Riley confronts a fellow officer at the police station
Greyston Holt

Tommie Discovers Echo Canyon’s Secret

Two weeks earlier, Tommie works alongside Lulu in Echo Canyon’s greenhouse.

He’s becoming suspicious of Lawrence and particularly concerned that Lulu has been approved for something called “the project.” People leave for the project, but Tommie has noticed something disturbing.

They never come back.

Lulu brushes off his concerns and proudly shows him the neon green polish she put on her fingernails for him.

Later, a storm tears through Echo Canyon. While Tommie struggles to get the pigs into their barn, he slips in the mud.

That’s when he sees it.

A severed finger with neon green nail polish.

Leonard claims Lulu overdosed and was buried on the property because she had no family. According to him, a coyote must have disturbed the grave.

Tommie doesn’t believe a word of it.

After he leaves, Judith warns Lawrence that Tommie is asking too many questions.

Lawrence isn’t concerned.

Tommie won’t be asking questions much longer.

Charlie Didn’t Kill Himself

Back in the present, Neagley and Hudson Riley investigate Charlie’s death.

The bullet casing offers nothing useful, but Neagley notices something more important.

Charlie supposedly shot himself using his nondominant hand.

The suicide was staged.

That discovery gives the Neagley Season 1 Episode 2 Recap another direct connection to the people determined to hide whatever is happening at Echo Canyon.

They learn Charlie had a daughter and worked as a bag man. They also find a napkin containing several names from a local bar.

Then Neagley catches the glint of a rifle scope outside.

She calmly retrieves her sniper rifle and spots two men fleeing.

Hudson recognizes them.

A morgue camera captured the same men removing the teeth from the burned driver who tried to kill Neagley.

The Neagley Season 1 Episode 2 Recap has just connected another pair of Echo Canyon’s loose ends.

Meet Davos and Ford

Neagley and Hudson follow Charlie’s napkin to the bar.

After some persuasive questioning, which includes Neagley threatening to burn the place down, the owner identifies their two mystery men.

Davos and Ford.

But another revelation hits Hudson on the way out.

A patron recognizes him as “Rats Riley,” claiming a criminal named Nicky Nights has been telling people Hudson is a crooked cop who can get them out of jail.

Hudson explodes.

He storms into Nicky’s warehouse and punches him, warning that if anyone else calls him corrupt, he’ll return and arrest him.

One of Nicky’s men comes at them with a bat.

Neagley handles that problem.

Neagley and Hudson Have the Same Problem

Later, Hudson sits in a diner icing his injured hand while Neagley lectures him about losing control.

If they’re going to work together, she needs someone she can count on.

Hudson offers his hand.

Neagley refuses to shake it.

His response lands harder than the punch he threw earlier.

Maybe she has issues to work through too.

That observation follows Neagley to the hospital, where she visits her father and asks when she became afraid of touching people.

He tells her she’s always been that way.

But Neagley has evidence suggesting otherwise.

She shows him an old photograph of herself embracing Tommie.

Something changed.

Neither of them can remember exactly when.

Tommie Sends Neagley a Message

While sorting through her father’s mail, Neagley discovers something unexpected.

A letter from Tommie.

Inside is a packet of white powder.

She takes it to Renee for testing.

Meanwhile, a routine case at the office gives Neagley another idea. After discussing a client’s suspicions that his wife is cheating, she realizes they should check pawn shops for information about Davos and Ford.

Eventually, Neagley and Hudson locate an address for Ford.

He runs.

They catch him.

Ford Worships Lawrence Cole

During interrogation, Ford reveals just how deeply Echo Canyon’s ideology has taken hold.

Asked about Lawrence Cole, he describes him as a visionary and a portal to a better world.

Before Neagley and Hudson can push further, an expensive attorney arrives and shuts everything down.

Neagley immediately sees another problem.

How can Ford afford a thousand-dollar-an-hour lawyer?

Once they’re gone, the attorney pulls out a butane torch.

Ford uses it to burn the Echo Canyon tattoo from his skin.

Someone is erasing evidence again.

Woodrow Eliminates Another Problem

Lawrence calls Pierce Woodrow and tells him what happened.

Woodrow assures him he’ll handle it.

He meets a federal officer on a park bench, someone who has apparently been helping cover his tracks.

The officer wants more money.

Woodrow pays him.

Then he shakes his hand.

Hidden in the handshake is a digitalis patch.

Within moments, the officer begins convulsing and suffers a fatal heart attack.

Woodrow retrieves the patch.

Then he takes back his money.

Whatever operation sits behind Echo Canyon reaches far beyond the compound.

Why Did Tommie Send Rye Flour?

Neagley and Hudson return to her apartment and immediately notice something wrong.

A light is on.

They enter with guns drawn.

Their intruder is Kino, sitting on the couch in his underwear eating cereal.

Crisis downgraded.

Then Renee arrives with the results from Tommie’s mysterious package.

The white powder isn’t a drug or poison.

It’s rye flour.

That makes the clue stranger, not simpler.

Why would Tommie send Neagley rye flour shortly before his death?

The Neagley Season 1 Episode 2 Recap turns the flour into another piece of Tommie’s message, but Neagley doesn’t yet know how to read it.

To understand what he discovered, she needs someone inside Echo Canyon.

She has just the volunteer.

Sort of.

Kino Goes Undercover

Kino approaches Echo Canyon through its farmers market and presents himself as someone struggling to stay clean.

The story works.

He’s invited back to the compound.

It’s the gamble at the center of the Neagley Season 1 Episode 2 Recap: if Kino can get close to Lawrence, Neagley may finally learn what Tommie discovered before he died.

Judith interviews him and eventually takes him deeper inside to meet Lawrence.

Outside, however, another threat is developing.

Davos has Neagley in his sights.

He settles behind his rifle and prepares to fire.

Neagley Season 1 Episode 2 Ending Explained

Inside Echo Canyon, Kino’s undercover operation lasts approximately as long as you would expect an operation involving Kino to last.

Lawrence enters the room.

He looks at him.

And immediately recognizes him.

Lawrence pulls a gun and points it directly at Kino.

Outside, Davos is preparing to shoot Neagley.

The Neagley Season 1 Episode 2 Recap ends with both sides of the investigation collapsing simultaneously.

Neagley wanted someone inside Echo Canyon.

She got him there.

The problem is that Echo Canyon appears to know exactly who has come looking for them.

The Bottom Line

Neagley Season 1 Episode 2 Recap expands the mystery introduced in “L Train” by showing that Tommie was already investigating Echo Canyon before his death.

Lulu’s severed finger provides the first glimpse of what may happen to people selected for “the project,” while Ford’s devotion to Lawrence reveals an organization capable of inspiring extraordinary loyalty. Woodrow’s effortless murder of a federal officer suggests its reach extends far beyond the compound.

But “Team Building Exercises” also continues building Frances herself.

Her conversation with Hudson and the photograph of her embracing Tommie turn her aversion to physical contact into another mystery running alongside the investigation. Something happened to Neagley.

And Tommie may have been one of the few people who knew her before it did.

Now his strange package of rye flour may be trying to tell her why.
