Academy Continues to Diversify Membership

Recently, the Academy of Motion Pictures and Sciences (AMPAS) extended invitations to 276 film industry professionals to join the academy. Plenty of notables professionals of color made the cut as the Academy continues to diversify their membership.

The academy swung their doors open to welcome a group of distinguished professionals across multiple voting branches. Among the group making the cut as new Academy voting members are Rosario Dawson, Kimberly Elise, Lucy Liu, Jennifer Lopez, Paula Patton and Chris Tucker in the Acting Branch. Leading members of the Director’s Branch is Ava DuVernay, Steve McQueen, Tim Story and Beasts of the Southern Wild‘s Behn Zeitlen.

The documentary branch welcomes Orlando Bagwell, William Greaves, Stanley Nelson and Roger Ross Williams. Prince and Siedah Garrett join the Music Branch. Tina Gordon Chism, Reggie Rock Bythewood and DuVernay were invited to the Writer’s Branch. Due to the fact that an individual can only belong to one branch, DuVernay must choose between the Directors and the Writers’ branches where she’ll cast her vote.

New members will be welcomed into the Academy at an invitation-only reception in September.
