The teaser trailer for Black Nativity debuted on the BET Awards last night. It has now been posted online and here is your first peek at the musical featuring an all-star cast.

Black Nativity tells the story of a teenage boy from Baltimore who is sent by his single mother to Harlem to spend Christmas with the grandparents he’s never met. Through his grandfather’s Christmas Eve sermon, he learns about the importance of faith and family.

Oscar and Black Reel Award winner Jennifer Hudson will play the mother who hasn’t spoken to her father since they had a falling out after she got pregnant. Three-time Black Reel Award winner Angela Bassett and Oscar and Black Reel Award winning actor Forest Whitaker will play the boy’s estranged grandparents, Rev. Clarence and Aretha Cobbs. Whitaker is expected to play multiple characters during the Nativity sequence.

Kasi Lemmons (Eve’s Bayou, The Caveman Valentine) wrote and directed the film based on Langston Hughes’ gospel musical that was first performed on Broadway in 1961. In addition to Hudson, Bassett and Whitaker, Black Nativity will feature Mary J. Blige, Tyrese Gibson, Jacob Latimore, Vondie Curtis-Hall, and Nas.

Black Nativity opens in theaters on November 27, 2013.
