Strange New Worlds S4 E9 Preview: “Once La’An a Time” Puts La’An at the Center

After “Orders of Magnitude” pushed James T. Kirk toward a defining test of command, Strange New Worlds S4 E9 Preview turns the spotlight back to La’An Noonien-Singh as Star Trek: Strange New Worlds enters the final stretch of Season 4.

The title alone makes “Once La’An a Time” feel personal. La’An has spent much of the season navigating questions of trust, connection and the emotions she has worked so hard to control. With the finale approaching, Episode 9 arrives at the perfect moment to bring those threads to the surface.

La’An Steps Into the Spotlight

La’An has undergone one of the series’ most complicated emotional journeys.

Her instinct has always been control. Discipline, duty and emotional distance have allowed her to survive experiences that might have overwhelmed someone else.

But those defenses have gradually weakened.

Her relationship with Kirk opened a door she never expected. Her evolving connection with Spock has complicated matters further, while the Enterprise itself has become something La’An once struggled to imagine having: a home.

Strange New Worlds S4 E9 Preview arrives with all of those relationships potentially converging.

Kirk and Spock Complicate La’An’s Journey

“Orders of Magnitude” brought Kirk back aboard the Enterprise and immediately reminded us that his connection with La’An hasn’t disappeared.

She admitted the feeling was mutual.

At the same time, La’An’s recent experiences with Spock have created another emotional possibility she hasn’t fully resolved.

That makes Episode 9 particularly intriguing.

The question isn’t simply which relationship La’An might choose. The more interesting question is whether she is finally ready to stop treating vulnerability as something that must be controlled.

For a character whose survival has depended upon emotional armor, allowing herself to want something may be the bigger leap.

The Title Suggests Something More Personal

“Once La’An a Time” is an unusually character-specific title, suggesting that the episode may explore La’An’s story through a different lens.

Throughout Strange New Worlds, La’An has been defined partly by history. Her family name carries the legacy of Khan Noonien-Singh, while her own childhood trauma has shaped nearly every relationship she’s formed.

But Season 4 has increasingly challenged her to imagine a future that isn’t dictated by either.

Strange New Worlds S4 E9 Preview therefore arrives at an important crossroads.

La’An has spent years surviving her past.

But Season 4 has increasingly challenged her to imagine a future that isn’t dictated by either.

Strange New Worlds S4 E9 Preview therefore arrives at an important crossroads. Episode 9 could be less about La’An choosing between Kirk and Spock and more about choosing herself, separating the woman she is becoming from the history that has defined her for so long.

La’An has spent years surviving her past.

Now she may finally begin writing a future of her own.

The Enterprise Approaches the Finale

Episode 9 also carries the responsibility of setting the stage for “Tomorrow’s Enterprise,” the Season 4 finale.

This season has repeatedly tested the crew away from conventional missions.

Pike has confronted grief and the limits of command. Spock has wrestled with control. Uhura has taken another major step toward becoming the officer audiences know, earning her promotion to Lieutenant Junior Grade. Kirk has discovered the truth about his father while demonstrating the instincts of a future captain.

Now La’An gets her turn.

Whatever happens in “Once La’An a Time” could leave her, and potentially the Enterprise, in a very different place heading into the finale.

What to Watch in “Once La’An a Time”

Watch how the episode builds on La’An’s unresolved feelings for Kirk and Spock, whether her Noonien-Singh legacy returns to the foreground, and how her personal journey connects to the approaching season finale. Watch whether the events of Episode 9 directly trigger the crisis that carries the Enterprise into “Tomorrow’s Enterprise.”

Most importantly, watch what happens when one of the Enterprise’s most guarded officers can no longer hide behind duty.

Strange New Worlds S4 E9 Preview suggests Episode 9 could finally ask La’An the question that has followed her throughout the series:

She knows how to survive.

But does she know how to live?

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 4 Episode 9, “Once La’An a Time,” premieres September 17 on Paramount+.
