Reacher Season 4 Episode 2 Recap Begins in a Cage

Reacher wakes handcuffed to a bed.

Tamara Green and Jacob Merrick are being held in neighboring cells, although neither is restrained.

Then the mysterious federal agents arrive with a man wearing a white lab coat.

He has a needle.

The man claims the injection will help clear Reacher’s head following the tranquilizers used to capture him.

Reacher offers an alternative.

If the man comes any closer, Reacher will shove the needle into his eye.

Apparently satisfied that their prisoner is sufficiently alert, the agents abandon that idea.

They move Reacher into an interrogation room.

Once again, he asks for their names.

Once again, they refuse.

So Reacher gives them new ones.

Wynken, Blynken, and Nod.

Why?

Because he’s about to knock them out.

The agents probably should have taken the warning more seriously.

Reacher Breaks Out

Wynken demands the thumb drive.

Reacher doesn’t have it.

More importantly, he has grown tired of answering the same question.

He kicks over the interrogation table and proceeds to take down every agent in the room.

Then he grabs a set of car keys.

Watching from their cells, Tamara and Jacob assume Reacher is abandoning them and heading for the vehicle.

They should know him better by now.

Reacher opens the trunk and retrieves the jack.

He returns to the cells and uses it to widen the bars enough for Tamara and Jacob to escape.

The three race down an alley as armed men pursue them in vehicles.

Then salvation arrives in perhaps the least intimidating getaway vehicle imaginable.

A minivan.

They jump inside.

Behind the wheel is Russell Plum, a freelance reporter who has been watching the facility for months.

Russell Plum Has Been Watching

Plum believes the building is a CIA black site.

He has spent months monitoring the people entering and leaving the facility, waiting for something that might confirm his suspicions.

When he saw Reacher, Tamara, and Jacob brought inside the previous night, Plum realized he might finally have stumbled onto the story that could revive his career.

Reacher tells him they need to get to Washington.

Plum laughs.

They are already there.

He drives around the block and takes them to his loft, conveniently located directly across from the suspected black site.

From his windows, they can watch the facility.

Now everyone begins comparing notes.

For Plum, this is potentially the biggest story of his career.

For Jacob, it is about discovering why his sister died.

For Tamara, it is an investigation that has been taken away from her.

For Reacher?

Something still doesn’t add up.

The Investigation Splits

The group decides they can cover more ground separately.

Tamara and Jacob will return to Anna’s house and search for anything the authorities may have overlooked.

Reacher will approach Congressman John Samson directly.

Plum stays behind to continue watching the black site.

Reacher heads to Samson’s office and leaves a message with his representative.

He doesn’t bother with subtlety.

A woman died in front of him while mentioning Samson’s name.

If the congressman wants to know more, Reacher will be waiting near the food trucks on the National Mall.

Now Reacher waits to see who responds.

Anna’s House Has Been Ransacked

Tamara and Jacob arrive at Anna’s home.

Someone has already been there.

The house has been completely ransacked, and Anna’s car is missing.

Whatever she possessed, someone desperately wanted it.

Then Tamara realizes they aren’t alone.

A man attacks them inside the house.

Together, Tamara and Jacob manage to knock him unconscious.

Before they can determine much more, the house phone rings.

Tamara answers.

She pretends to be Anna.

The caller delivers another complication.

Anna’s son, Ben, never arrived at football practice.

Anna is dead.

Her house has been torn apart.

Her car is gone.

And now her son is missing.

The Reacher Season 4 Episode 2 Recap suddenly shifts the stakes from discovering what Anna knew to determining whether someone else in her family is in danger.

Snap, Crackle and Pop Return

Reacher arrives at his chosen rendezvous expecting Congressman Samson.

Instead, he gets three familiar faces.

Snap, Crackle and Pop.

The original federal agents from Philadelphia have followed him to Washington.

Reacher tells them what he knows about the suspected CIA black site, making it clear that their refusal to explain themselves is becoming increasingly suspicious.

They aren’t impressed.

Before Reacher leaves, Snap gives him a warning.

Stay out of it.

There is almost no sentence less likely to work on Jack Reacher.

The Search for Ben Takes a Dark Turn

Reacher picks up Tamara and Jacob in Plum’s car.

Their search for Ben leads them to a fraternity house.

While questioning the men there, Reacher notices someone trying to slip away.

Wrong move.

Reacher gives chase.

The young man eventually reveals that Ben had been set up with an OnlyFans model.

He gives them her address.

Reacher, Tamara, and Jacob head to the woman’s apartment hoping to find Ben.

Instead, they discover something horrifying.

The woman is dead.

She has been tied to her bed.

Her body is covered in cuts.

Whatever started aboard that Philadelphia subway has now produced another corpse.

And Ben Merrick is still missing.

John Samson Finally Meets Reacher

Reacher leaves the murder scene and tracks down Congressman John Samson at a political event.

This time, Samson agrees to talk.

The two meet privately in a hotel room, where Reacher tells him part of Lila’s story.

Lila claims Samson is her biological father.

She says she has leukemia.

She may eventually need him as a bone marrow donor.

Samson doesn’t hesitate.

According to him, Lila’s story is impossible.

He insists that he never fathered children while serving in Indonesia.

Then he does something Reacher doesn’t expect.

He offers proof.

Samson provides a saliva sample in a glass and tells Reacher he can have the DNA tested.

Reacher declines.

He doesn’t need it.

He has already studied Samson closely enough to reach a conclusion.

The congressman is telling the truth.

And that creates a much bigger problem.

If Lila’s story isn’t true, why did she tell it?

The Paternity Story Doesn’t Add Up

The revelation fundamentally changes Reacher’s understanding of the investigation.

Lila presented the connection to Samson as deeply personal.

She needed to prove he was her biological father because her leukemia might eventually require a bone marrow transplant.

That explanation gave her pursuit of Samson a logical motive.

Now Reacher believes the motive is false.

Someone has constructed an elaborate story around Congressman Samson.

Anna was involved.

Lila is involved.

Multiple federal groups are involved.

People are willing to kill for a thumb drive that Reacher has never actually seen.

That is far too much machinery for a simple paternity dispute.

The Reacher Season 4 Episode 2 Recap reaches its crucial turning point here because Reacher finally understands that Lila’s story isn’t the explanation for the conspiracy.

It is another piece of it.

Reacher Recognizes the Missing Witness

Reacher leaves the hotel and reunites with Tamara and Jacob outside.

Then he sees someone.

A familiar face.

Reacher recognizes him immediately.

Nolan Cahill.

Congressman Samson’s chief of staff.

But that isn’t where Reacher first saw him.

Cahill was on the subway.

He was there when Anna Merrick killed herself.

And he is the passenger who disappeared before police arrived.

Suddenly, one of the premiere’s biggest unanswered questions has a face.

The missing witness isn’t some random passenger.

He works for the very congressman Anna and Lila were supposedly investigating.

That cannot be coincidence.

Reacher Season 4 Episode 2 Ending Explained

Before the Reacher Season 4 Episode 2 Recap concludes, “Cage Fight” answers one major question from the premiere while creating several more.

Who kidnapped Reacher?

Russell Plum believes the facility where Reacher, Tamara, and Jacob are being held is a CIA black site that he has monitored for months. The episode establishes Plum’s belief but does not yet definitively explain who is operating the facility or why they are so desperate to recover Anna’s thumb drive.

What happened to Ben Merrick?

Ben is missing. Tamara learns that he never arrived for football practice, and the investigation eventually leads Reacher, Tamara, and Jacob to a woman Ben was supposed to meet. They find her murdered, but Ben’s whereabouts remain unknown.

Is Congressman John Samson Lila’s father?

Reacher doesn’t believe so. Samson strongly denies fathering a child while serving in Indonesia and willingly offers DNA evidence. Reacher refuses the sample because Samson’s behavior convinces him that the congressman is telling the truth.

Who was the missing subway passenger?

The missing witness is Nolan Cahill, Congressman Samson’s chief of staff. Reacher recognizes him outside the hotel as one of the passengers present when Anna died. His connection to Samson makes his disappearance from the original crime scene considerably more suspicious.

Final Thoughts

The Reacher Season 4 Episode 2 Recap takes everything “City of Brotherly Love” established and deliberately makes it harder to understand.

That’s a compliment.

“Cage Fight” isn’t interested in resolving the mystery too quickly. Instead, every apparent answer opens another door.

Reacher escapes his captors, but now there may be a CIA black site involved.

Anna’s home could contain answers, but someone has already ransacked it.

The investigation turns toward her son, but the woman Ben was supposed to meet has been brutally murdered.

Lila’s story appeared to provide a motive, but Reacher becomes convinced that John Samson isn’t her father.

And the missing passenger from the subway?

He works for Samson.

The Reacher Season 4 Episode 2 Recap ultimately makes Nolan Cahill the most important new piece of the puzzle. He isn’t merely connected to Congressman Samson. He witnessed Anna’s death and then disappeared before investigators could question him.

Reacher noticed four witnesses.

The police found three.

Now he has found number four.

The question isn’t whether Nolan Cahill knows something.

It’s why he didn’t want anyone to know he was there.
