A Cinematic Journey Through the Empire State During Black History Month
The Black New York series has officially begun.
Throughout the month of February, FilmGordon will celebrate New York City as one of the most foundational cities in the history of cinema. Often called the Empire State and known worldwide as the city that never sleeps, New York has long served as both subject and setting for some of the most influential films ever made.
From early tenement stories and social realism to film noir and modern interpretations by filmmakers such as Martin Scorsese, Woody Allen, and others, New York’s streets have carried the weight of ambition, conflict, creativity, and reinvention. Its neighborhoods have shaped characters, movements, and entire genres. The city’s heartbeat has always been cinematic.
Black New York explores how Black life has moved through that city on screen.
Over the course of Black History Month, the series presents a daily film that reflects a specific moment, mood, and place within New York. Harlem, Brooklyn, the Bronx, Queens, and citywide experiences all come into focus as the series moves through decades of Black cinematic history. Each film is paired with cultural context and music that reflects the era, atmosphere, and emotional terrain of the story being told.
This is not a ranking and it is not a syllabus. Black New York is curated as a journey. One that moves through institutions, romance, community, power, memory, and legacy. One that allows the city to shift beneath your feet from day to day, just as it does in real life.
The series honors the films, the periods they represent, and the artists who brought them to life. Directors, performers, and musicians all play a role in shaping how New York has been imagined, challenged, and preserved on screen.
So strap on your Timbs and follow along.
Black New York invites audiences to travel block by block and borough by borough through cinema during Black History Month. Each day brings a new stop. Each stop reveals a different version of the city.
The journey unfolds all month long at TheFilmGordon.com.
