Summer Madness | Whoopi Goldberg (Day 12)

by Tim Gordon

Inspired by Turner Classic Movies’ beloved “Summer Under the Stars” tradition, we proudly present Summer Madness, a celebration of Black brilliance on screen.

Each day throughout August, we’ll shine the spotlight on one extraordinary Black actor, honoring their achievements, their artistry, and the unforgettable films that shaped their legacy. This series is more than a viewing guide; it’s a journey through decades of cinematic history, paying tribute to the trailblazers, icons, and storytellers who transformed the screen and continue to inspire the world.

Whoopi Goldberg

A true icon across comedy, drama, stage, and screen, Whoopi Goldberg is one of the few performers in history to achieve the coveted EGOT, winning an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony.

She burst onto the scene with her Oscar-nominated debut in The Color Purple (1985), a performance that announced the arrival of a singular talent. She followed that up with Ghost (1990), where her unforgettable turn as psychic Oda Mae Brown won her the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. But Whoopi’s impact didn’t stop with dramatic roles; she brought joy and empowerment to the masses in Sister Act and used her platform to speak truth as a producer, host, and cultural commentator.

Equally adept at making us laugh, cry, and think, Goldberg has blazed a trail that few can follow — and even fewer can match.
