Reacher Season 4 Episode 7 Recap Begins With an Execution

“Vote for Sampson” begins exactly where “Plum Out of Luck” left Reacher and Tamara.

Handcuffed.

On the ground.

Two gunmen standing over them.

The first shooter tells the second not to aim for their heads. Both men prepare to fire.

Then a car horn interrupts them.

A stranger approaches asking for directions, claiming he’s lost. The gunmen quickly hide their weapons behind their backs.

They never get another chance to use them.

Both are shot in the head.

Springfield emerges.

He followed the transport van after watching Ahlquist’s men load Reacher and Tamara inside.

Once Reacher is freed, he has one immediate priority.

Ahlquist.

Their conversation isn’t finished.

Docherty Makes a Surprising Decision

Back in Philadelphia, Docherty pulls into an alley with Jacob.

He orders Jacob out of the vehicle.

Then he tells him to turn around.

Jacob assumes the worst.

He pleads for his life, but instead of killing him, Docherty removes the handcuffs.

Run.

Docherty explains that he trusts his partner and realized Jacob probably wouldn’t have survived if he hadn’t intervened.

Jacob is free.

Before leaving, he asks Docherty to check on Plum at the hospital.

Jacob also admits something that has been bothering him.

He never should have left Plum behind at the library.

Reacher Finally Gets Ahlquist Talking

Ahlquist calls his team looking for an update.

Instead, the transport van suddenly crashes into his vehicle.

His car rolls into a ditch.

Reacher, Tamara, and Springfield pull him from the wreckage.

They want answers.

Ahlquist initially refuses.

Reacher snaps one of his fingers.

Suddenly, Ahlquist becomes considerably more interested in conversation.

What he reveals finally connects Anna Merrick’s death, the mysterious photograph, and the events in Indonesia.

Reacher Season 4 Episode 7 Recap Reveals the Secret Indonesian Laboratory

Ahlquist explains that after the 1995 sarin attack, the United States became concerned about its vulnerability to future chemical attacks.

The response was a secret laboratory in Indonesia.

Scientists there developed deadly toxins.

And their antidotes.

The information written on the whiteboard in Anna’s photograph contains the chemical profile of the laboratory’s final toxin.

At the time the photograph was taken, the image wasn’t clear enough to reveal the formula.

Technology changed that.

Today, the blurred information can be reconstructed.

Anna unknowingly possessed the blueprint for a chemical weapon.

Anna Merrick Triggered a Department of Defense Alert

When Anna downloaded the photograph, she triggered alerts within the Department of Defense.

Because of his connection to the original program, the department contacted Sampson.

Cahill answered the call.

He then followed Anna onto the train to recover the information.

But the encounter went horribly wrong.

Anna shot herself.

Cahill fled.

Afterward, he contacted Foster, the CIA operative overseeing the operation.

Reacher knows exactly who Foster is.

He’s the man Reacher dragged through the bars of his jail cell.

The Reacher Season 4 Episode 7 Recap finally explains why so many seemingly disconnected players have been circling Anna’s evidence.

They weren’t chasing an ordinary government secret.

They were trying to prevent a chemical weapon from resurfacing.

Ahlquist Reveals His Connection to the Toxin

Tamara wants to know why Cahill contacted Foster.

Ahlquist hesitates again.

Reacher threatens another finger.

That keeps the story moving.

Ahlquist admits his company was built around the toxins developed through the Indonesian program.

He may be one of the only people still alive who fully understands what happened there and what the formula could mean if recreated.

But the history becomes even darker.

General Putra discovered the secret American weapons facility and expelled the Americans from Indonesia.

Then he used the toxin.

His target was a political rival.

The result was the destruction of an entire village.

When the United States discovered what Putra had done, it sent a Delta team back into Indonesia to “deal” with the situation.

Suddenly, the photograph isn’t merely evidence of an old government program.

It’s evidence of a massacre.

The Truth About Emesha and Lila

Ahlquist also investigated Emesha.

What he discovered explains why she has pursued the information with such determination.

Emesha survived General Putra’s special guard.

Lila became her devoted acolyte.

Their pursuit of Anna’s information therefore isn’t simply about money or espionage.

The toxin connects directly to Emesha’s past.

But whatever may have started their mission has evolved into something far more dangerous.

They aren’t merely exposing the weapon.

They’re rebuilding it.

Reacher Makes His Judgment

Ahlquist insists he would never reveal the information.

He claims he would never give anyone the toxin’s formula.

Reacher listens.

Then he snaps Ahlquist’s neck.

Springfield is stunned.

He reminds Reacher that he just killed a man in front of someone who could soon become the next president’s head of security.

Tamara isn’t particularly troubled by the decision.

The three leave.

For Reacher, the calculation is simple.

Ahlquist helped create something capable of killing thousands.

And he has already demonstrated what he will do to protect himself.

The Reacher Season 4 Episode 7 Recap leaves no ambiguity about Reacher’s verdict.

Ahlquist isn’t getting another opportunity.

Lila and Emesha Test the Toxin

Elsewhere, the nightmare Ahlquist described becomes real.

Lila’s chemist has successfully recreated the toxin.

Now they need to know whether it works.

Their people bring in a woman from the street.

She thinks she’s being offered some kind of job.

Instead, she becomes their test subject.

The chemist prepares a syringe.

Lila tells the woman all her problems are about to disappear.

They inject her.

Within seconds, blood begins pouring from her eyes.

She convulses violently.

Then she dies.

The body is wrapped in plastic and stuffed into a blue barrel.

The experiment is successful.

Lila and Emesha now possess a functioning chemical weapon.

The Dark Web Auction Changes Everything

Jacob contacts Reacher and Tamara with alarming information.

An auction has appeared on the Dark Web.

The item?

A weapon.

And the sellers intend to provide a proof of concept.

Reacher immediately understands what that means.

Lila and Emesha aren’t planning to simply sell the formula.

They’re going to demonstrate the weapon first.

Someone is about to die.

Potentially a lot of people.

The Reacher Season 4 Episode 7 Recap shifts into a race against time as the investigation becomes an attempt to prevent a mass-casualty attack.

Reacher Has to Find the Target

Reacher, Tamara, and Springfield drive the transport van back to Philadelphia and pick up Jacob.

They begin trying to determine where Lila and Emesha intend to strike.

Docherty puts the police on alert.

But Philadelphia offers countless potential targets.

They need something more specific.

Then Reacher calls Sampson.

The conversation produces the final missing piece.

Sampson Confesses to Killing General Putra

After hearing what Reacher has learned, Sampson finally reveals his connection to Indonesia.

He killed General Putra.

The admission reframes Sampson’s involvement in everything that has happened.

The Delta team Ahlquist described wasn’t some abstract military unit buried in classified history.

Sampson was part of it.

And if Emesha’s mission is connected to what happened in Indonesia, Sampson may not simply know the target.

He may be the target.

Sampson is scheduled to attend a political fundraiser.

Suddenly, Reacher knows where Lila and Emesha may strike.

Reacher Season 4 Episode 7 Recap Targets the Sampson Fundraiser

Reacher tells Tamara to head toward the fundraiser.

Meanwhile, he stays on the phone with Sampson.

They need to identify a potential suicide bomber inside a crowded political event.

Reacher walks Sampson through the warning signs.

Sampson scans the crowd.

Then he sees someone.

A suspicious man matches the profile.

Reacher races toward the event.

Time is disappearing.

Sampson Finds the Bomber

Reacher arrives and charges past security.

The guards call after him.

That commotion gets the suspect’s attention.

The nervous man pulls out a detonator.

There is no longer any doubt.

He’s the bomber.

And everyone around him is in danger.

Sampson doesn’t wait for Reacher.

He attacks.

Sampson Takes the Fight Into the River

Sampson spear tackles the bomber.

Both men plunge into the river.

Seconds later, the bomb detonates beneath the water.

The Reacher Season 4 Episode 7 Recap ends with an explosion and an enormous unanswered question.

Sampson may have just prevented a chemical attack on a crowded fundraiser.

But he was still in the water when the device exploded.

And with Lila and Emesha’s toxin successfully created, stopping one bomber doesn’t necessarily mean the threat is over.

The conspiracy has reached its final stage.

Now Reacher has to finish it.

Reacher Season 4 Episode 7 Ending Explained

Reacher Season 4 Episode 7 Recap finally reveals the origins of the chemical weapon at the center of Anna Merrick’s investigation while explaining how Sampson, Ahlquist, Cahill, Foster, Lila, and Emesha became connected to it.

What was the secret laboratory in Indonesia?

According to Ahlquist, the United States established a secret laboratory in Indonesia following the 1995 sarin attack. Its purpose was to develop deadly toxins and corresponding antidotes to prepare for potential chemical attacks.

What was hidden in Anna Merrick’s photograph?

The whiteboard visible in the photograph contains the chemical profile of the laboratory’s final toxin. Modern technology makes it possible to decipher the previously blurred information.

Why did Cahill follow Anna?

Anna’s download triggered a Department of Defense alert. The department contacted Sampson because of his connection to the program, and Cahill responded. Cahill followed Anna onto the train to recover the information before her death.

Why are Lila and Emesha interested in the toxin?

Ahlquist reveals that Emesha survived General Putra’s special guard and that Lila became her devoted acolyte. Their connection to what happened in Indonesia gives their pursuit of the formula a personal origin, although they now intend to auction the weapon after demonstrating its effectiveness.

What did Sampson do in Indonesia?

Sampson confesses that he killed General Putra. Ahlquist previously revealed that the United States sent a Delta team into Indonesia after discovering Putra had used the toxin to wipe out an entire village.

What is the “proof of concept”?

Lila and Emesha intend to demonstrate that their chemical weapon works before selling it through a Dark Web auction. The attack on Sampson’s fundraiser appears designed to provide that demonstration.

Does Sampson die?

The episode does not establish Sampson’s fate. He tackles the suspected bomber into the river immediately before the explosive device detonates underwater, leaving his condition unresolved at the end of “Vote for Sampson.”

Final Thoughts

Reacher Season 4 Episode 7 Recap turns “Vote for Sampson” into the chapter where nearly every mystery surrounding Anna Merrick finally snaps into focus.

The photograph.

The whiteboard.

Ahlquist.

Cahill.

Foster.

Sampson.

Indonesia.

Even Lila and Emesha.

What initially looked like a complicated struggle over classified information is actually the aftermath of a chemical weapons program whose consequences have survived for decades.

Anna didn’t merely discover an embarrassing government secret.

She uncovered information capable of recreating a weapon that had already destroyed an entire village.

That revelation also changes the stakes heading into the finale.

Reacher isn’t investigating a murder anymore.

He’s trying to prevent history from repeating itself.

“Vote for Sampson” gives the penultimate episode an appropriately explosive finish by bringing Sampson’s past crashing into his present. The man who killed General Putra becomes the man willing to throw himself onto a bomber to protect everyone around him.

But one threat has only been stopped.

Lila and Emesha still possess the toxin.

The Dark Web auction is underway.

And the people responsible for turning decades-old secrets into a modern weapon are still out there.

The Reacher Season 4 Episode 7 Recap leaves Jack Reacher with one final job.

Find them.

Stop them.

And make sure there isn’t enough left of the conspiracy to survive him.
