Reacher Season 4 Episode 4 Recap Begins With Another Body

Nolan Cahill’s body lies on top of a car.

After walking from the rooftop at the conclusion of “One Small Step,” Cahill has taken whatever secrets he possessed with him.

A detective questions Congressman John Samson until he decides he has had enough.

She turns to Reacher.

How can she contact him?

Reacher gives her the most Reacher answer possible.

She can’t.

Samson tells the detective that any additional questions can go through his office before inviting Reacher for a drink.

Cahill may be dead, but Samson is finally ready to talk.

Anna Worked at a Government Burn Site

Back in Washington, Plum traces the address associated with Anna’s mysterious security badge.

It leads to a government burn site.

The facility exists to destroy physical evidence and sensitive documents.

That immediately raises another question.

What was Anna doing there?

Tamara decides they’re going to find out.

She and Jacob follow a woman from the facility’s parking lot to a nearby coffee shop.

Jacob approaches her and deliberately spills coffee.

As he helps clean up the mess, he knocks the woman’s purse onto the floor.

While retrieving her belongings, he secretly removes her identification card and passes it to Tamara beneath the table.

Sometimes espionage requires sophisticated technology.

Sometimes it requires spilling coffee.

Samson Reveals What Happened in Indonesia

While Tamara and Jacob investigate Anna’s government connection, Samson finally tells Reacher the truth about Indonesia.

He was stationed there overseeing a United States biological weapons facility.

In exchange for access to the land, Samson’s Delta team trained General Putra and his soldiers in military tactics.

Then the United States left.

Putra used what he had learned against civilians.

The techniques American soldiers taught him became tools of extermination.

When the U.S. government eventually discovered what was happening, another team was sent to “deal” with the problem.

Samson insists he doesn’t know what information Anna stored on the missing thumb drive.

But he wants it back.

If Reacher finds it, Samson wants the drive returned to the Army.

Reacher has another plan.

He’ll look at what’s on the drive.

Then he’ll decide who gets it.

The Reacher Season 4 Episode 4 Recap makes clear that the conspiracy surrounding Anna isn’t simply political. Whatever she discovered may expose a buried chapter of American military operations overseas.

Tamara Becomes Anna Merrick

Tamara uses the stolen badge to enter the burn facility.

She tells a supervisor that she has been sent to replace Anna Merrick.

It works.

The supervisor takes her directly to Anna’s workstation, logs her into Anna’s account, and leaves.

Tamara begins searching.

She discovers something significant.

A file is missing from the server.

Anna downloaded it.

Then she deleted the original.

Suddenly, the obsession with Anna’s missing thumb drive makes considerably more sense.

Whatever everyone is searching for may be the only remaining copy of that file.

Outside, however, the employee whose badge Jacob stole arrives at the security desk.

The alarm is raised.

There’s an intruder inside.

Tamara Has to Run

Jacob calls Tamara.

Time to go.

She races through the facility as guards pursue her.

Tamara manages to reach the waiting vehicle, where Jacob and Plum are ready to make their escape.

They may not have recovered the file.

But now they know it existed.

Anna deliberately downloaded sensitive government information and removed it from the system.

The thumb drive isn’t merely something she happened to possess.

It may contain evidence someone desperately wants erased.

The CIA Comes After Reacher Again

Meanwhile, Reacher finds himself cornered by CIA operatives on the street.

They attempt to capture him.

Again.

Reacher responds predictably.

He fights his way free, jumps a fence, and runs.

After escaping, he calls Tamara for an update.

The team is stuck in traffic.

That detail triggers something.

Reacher begins reconstructing Anna’s movements on the night she died.

If traffic was this bad when Anna was traveling, she may have encountered the same problem.

She would have needed another way to reach her destination.

The subway.

Suddenly, Anna’s presence on the train isn’t random.

It may have been forced by circumstances.

Reacher tells the others he’ll meet them in Philadelphia.

Reacher Blames Himself for Anna’s Death

Reacher eventually reunites with the others in New York.

There, he tells Jacob something difficult.

He believes Anna’s suicide was his fault.

Reacher approached her because he thought she might be carrying a bomb.

Whatever Anna intended to do before he intervened, his presence altered those plans.

But Tamara has discovered another clue.

Mail was found inside Anna’s car.

One item appears to be missing.

A postage-paid envelope.

They reconstruct Anna’s likely plan.

She didn’t intend to carry the thumb drive all the way to Lila.

She mailed it.

And the destination was probably the original hotel where she and Lila planned to meet.

For the first time, they may actually know where the drive went.

Then Tamara receives a phone call.

The investigation stops cold.

Ben’s body has been found.

Ben Merrick Is Dead

Jacob has already lost his sister.

Now he has lost his nephew.

Tamara decides to accompany him to the morgue while Reacher separates from the group.

He calls Lila.

They need to meet at the hotel.

If Anna mailed the thumb drive before her death, it may finally be within reach.

But someone else is still watching them.

Reacher and Lila Return to the Hotel

Reacher meets Lila at the hotel.

There’s no mail.

Another dead end.

Then Reacher notices something.

They’ve been followed.

Again.

Two men in suits pursue them into the subway.

Reacher puts Lila safely aboard a train.

Then he turns around.

If the men want him, they can have him.

One attacker goes down unconscious.

Reacher knocks the weapon from the second man’s hand.

The man falls onto the tracks.

Electricity does the rest.

Reacher grabs the unconscious man’s radio and wallet before police begin closing in.

He disappears into the subway tunnels.

But what he hears over the radio changes everything.

The remaining men are moving toward Lila and Emesha’s hotel.

Reacher starts running.

The Karambit Connection

At the morgue, the medical examiner gives Jacob and Tamara devastating confirmation.

Ben was murdered.

His throat was cut.

More importantly, the weapon matches the blade used to kill the woman he was supposed to meet.

The murder weapon is an Indonesian curved knife.

A karambit.

Indonesia again.

General Putra.

Samson’s military service.

Lila’s mother.

And now the weapon used to murder Anna Merrick’s son.

The Reacher Season 4 Episode 4 Recap finally gives the episode’s title its meaning.

The pieces aren’t merely coming together.

They’re cutting through everyone connected to the truth.

Lila and Emesha Have a Surprise

Lila and Emesha return to their hotel.

Something is wrong.

Their door is open.

Inside, their bodyguards are dead.

Four men emerge from the adjoining room.

They’re carrying knives.

They demand the thumb drive.

The women appear trapped.

Except Lila and Emesha don’t surrender.

They reach for weapons of their own.

Karambits.

They assume fighting positions.

Suddenly, everything Reacher thought he understood about these women requires reconsideration.

Reacher Arrives Too Late

Reacher races toward the hotel.

He knows armed men are closing in.

He expects a massacre.

He gets one.

Just not the massacre he expected.

When Reacher reaches the hotel room, six men are dead.

He examines one of the bodies.

The wounds are distinctive.

Deep slashes.

Blade work.

Karambits.

Lila and Emesha are nowhere to be seen.

Before Reacher can process what happened, police storm into the room.

They see Jack Reacher standing among six bodies.

There aren’t many explanations that make that look good.

The police arrest him.

And “Karambits and Pieces” ends with Reacher in custody while the two women he believed needed his protection disappear after demonstrating they may never have needed protecting at all.

Reacher Season 4 Episode 4 Ending Explained

Before the Reacher Season 4 Episode 4 Recap concludes, “Karambits and Pieces” answers several major questions while transforming Lila and Emesha into two of the season’s biggest mysteries.

What was Anna doing at the government burn site?

Anna had access to a government facility responsible for destroying sensitive documents. Tamara discovers that Anna downloaded a file and subsequently deleted it from the facility’s server. The implication is that the missing thumb drive may contain the only surviving copy of that information.

What happened in Indonesia?

Samson reveals that he helped oversee a U.S. biological weapons facility in Indonesia. His Delta team also trained General Putra’s forces. After the Americans withdrew, Putra used that military training to exterminate civilians, eventually forcing the United States to send another team to deal with the situation.

What happened to Ben?

Ben Merrick has been murdered. The medical examiner determines that his throat was cut with the same type of weapon used to kill his escort: an Indonesian curved blade called a karambit.

Where is Anna’s thumb drive?

Reacher and the others believe Anna mailed the drive to the hotel where she was supposed to meet Lila. When Reacher and Lila check the hotel, however, there is no mail waiting for them. The location of the drive remains unknown.

Who killed the men in Lila and Emesha’s hotel room?

The episode strongly indicates that Lila and Emesha killed them. When four armed attackers confront the women, both reveal concealed karambits and assume fighting positions. Reacher later arrives to discover six bodies bearing distinctive slash wounds.

Why is Reacher arrested?

Police arrive moments after Reacher enters the hotel room and find him standing among six dead men. Lila and Emesha are gone, leaving Reacher as the only living person at the scene.

Final Thoughts

The Reacher Season 4 Episode 4 Recap delivers the season’s most revealing chapter yet because “Karambits and Pieces” finally begins turning questions into connections.

Indonesia is no longer background information.

It’s the center of the story.

Samson served there.

General Putra committed atrocities there.

Lila’s mother died there.

Ben and his escort are murdered with a weapon originating there.

And somewhere inside Anna’s missing thumb drive may be evidence explaining how all of those pieces fit together.

But Episode 4 saves its sharpest twist for Lila and Emesha.

For several episodes, Reacher has treated Lila as someone who needs his protection. She lied about her identity, eventually admitted she was investigating her mother’s death, and repeatedly found herself targeted by dangerous people.

Now six men are dead.

Lila and Emesha are gone.

And Reacher has finally discovered that the people he’s been protecting may be every bit as capable of violence as the people pursuing them.

The Reacher Season 4 Episode 4 Recap ends by flipping the investigation once again.

Reacher thought he was getting closer to discovering who killed Anna Merrick.

Instead, he may finally be asking the more important question.

Who exactly is Lila Hoth?

And with Jack Reacher sitting in police custody, she has a head start on making sure he doesn’t find out.
