Lanterns Season 1 Episode 6 Preview: “Bad Optics” Returns to Hal Jordan’s Murder
Lanterns Season 1 Episode 6 Preview brings the story back to 2026 and the mystery Lanterns has left simmering since its premiere: Who killed Hal Jordan?
After four episodes filling in the history between John Stewart and Hal, “Lights Out” completed the 2016 Rushville story with devastating consequences. Rushville was destroyed, Zoe was revealed as the Manhunter, John killed her, took Hal’s ring, and then rejected the Guardians’ offer to become Green Lantern.
Ten years later, John has already found Hal dead.
Now he has to discover what happened to him.
And “Bad Optics” introduces another Green Lantern into the investigation: Guy Gardner. The Episode 6 preview confirms that John seeks Guy’s help, while Sheriff Kerry Kane reveals that Hal returned to Rushville because of her.

The Setup
For much of the season, Lanterns has actually been telling two mysteries.
The first asked what happened in Rushville in 2016.
We now know.
John and Hal’s search for the alien presence eventually exposed Zoe as the Manhunter. But their investigation also destroyed their partnership. Hal’s willingness to sacrifice others to stop the threat pushed John past his breaking point, and John ultimately walked away from both his mentor and the Green Lantern Corps.
The second mystery has been waiting since the premiere.
Hal Jordan is dead in 2026.
“Bad Optics” finally picks that thread back up.
John Stewart Is Back on the Case
Lanterns Season 1 Episode 6 Preview finds John in a dramatically different position from the trainee we watched throughout 2016.
There is no Hal standing over his shoulder.
There is no Guardian telling him what to do.
And there may not even be a ring guiding his decisions.
This time, John is investigating Hal himself.
That gives the murder mystery an emotional weight it couldn’t have had before the flashbacks.
We now understand exactly how complicated these two men were.
Hal was John’s mentor, rival, obstacle and, eventually, partner.
John walked away from him.
Ten years later, someone made that separation permanent.
Kerry Kane Knows Why Hal Returned
Sheriff Kerry Kane may become John’s most important source.
Lanterns Season 1 Episode 6 Preview puts Kerry Kane back at the center of the mystery as John begins reconstructing what brought Hal Jordan back to Rushville before his death.
The Episode 6 footage indicates there were no witnesses to Hal’s death and points to evidence of a physical confrontation. More importantly, when John asks why Hal returned to Rushville, Kerry gives him a remarkably personal answer.
Hal came back for her.
That changes the investigation.
Rushville wasn’t merely the place where Hal’s body happened to be found.
Something brought him back to the town where his partnership with John fractured and where the Manhunter crisis changed all of their lives.
Understanding why Hal returned may be the first step toward understanding why he died.
Guy Gardner Enters John Stewart’s Investigation
Lanterns Season 1 Episode 6 Preview also expands the investigation beyond Rushville when John turns to Guy Gardner for help understanding what happened to Hal.
And then there is Guy Gardner.
Episode 5 helped explain why another Green Lantern could eventually occupy the space Hal once held. “Bad Optics” finally puts Guy directly into John’s story.
The preview indicates John wants his help investigating Hal’s murder.
Guy isn’t particularly interested.
His reason gives the episode its title.
Helping John investigate another Green Lantern’s death would be “bad optics.”
It’s a revealing introduction.
John approaches the mystery personally.
Guy appears to understand it institutionally.
For John, Hal was a man.
For the Corps, Hal Jordan may already be becoming a problem to manage.
Hal Jordan Leaves Behind a Complicated Legacy
That distinction matters because Charles Kirkland Jr.’s recaps have spent the season dismantling the idea of Hal Jordan as an uncomplicated legend.
John once knew him primarily as the Green Lantern who ruined his military career.
Training revealed something messier.
Hal could be reckless, arrogant and manipulative. He repeatedly withheld information. His relationship with Sinestro violated the Guardians’ orders. His decisions during the Manhunter crisis placed John and others in extraordinary danger.
But Hal also recognized John’s potential.
He began respecting his instincts.
And beneath all the conflict, something resembling friendship emerged.
That makes John’s investigation more than a whodunit.
To solve Hal Jordan’s murder, John may first have to understand the man he spent years trying to escape.
“Bad Optics” May Have More Than One Meaning
The title works beautifully because almost everything surrounding Hal now looks bad.
His history with Sinestro.
His conduct in Rushville.
His removal by the Guardians.
His relationship with John.
And now his death.
Guy’s reluctance to become involved suggests the Corps may be more concerned about appearances than John would like.
But there is another kind of optics at work.
John spent his childhood being taught to see fear as something to overcome. His military career taught him to identify targets. Hal taught him that what appears obvious is frequently wrong.
Now John has a murder scene filled with appearances.
“Bad Optics” may force him to stop looking at Hal Jordan as either hero or failure.
He has to look at the evidence.
Sinestro Still Has a Place in Hal Jordan’s Story
There is another person who understands Hal better than almost anyone.
Sinestro.
The season has already established their complicated history, and current footage for the back half of the season teases John returning to Sinestro as the investigation develops.
That creates a fascinating reversal.
Hal once went to Sinestro looking for answers about the Manhunter.
John may now need Sinestro for answers about Hal.
The prisoner Hal warned him about could become one of the few people capable of explaining what his mentor was doing before he died.
What to Watch
The biggest question entering “Bad Optics” is obviously who killed Hal Jordan, but Episode 6 has several mysteries nested inside that question: why Hal returned to Rushville, what happened during the years after John rejected the ring, what Kerry knows about Hal’s final days, why Guy wants distance from the investigation, and whether Sinestro knows more about Hal’s enemies than anyone else.
Most importantly, watch John.
The first half of Lanterns asked whether John Stewart was ready to become Green Lantern.
The second half may ask something harder.
What does John owe the man whose ring he refused?
Final Beat
Lanterns Season 1 Episode 6 Preview returns the series to where it began, but everything about that opening mystery means something different now.
In the premiere, Hal Jordan was a body.
Five episodes later, we know the man.
We know why John resented him.
We know why the Guardians rejected him.
We know how badly Hal could fail.
And we know why John might still care enough to find his killer.
That is what makes “Bad Optics” potentially such an important pivot.
The Manhunter case taught John that appearances can lie.
Now he has to apply that lesson to Hal Jordan.
The question is no longer simply who killed Green Lantern.
It is who killed Hal, and what was he doing back in Rushville when it happened?
