Lanterns Season 1 Episode 2 Recap Begins With John’s Training

Hal Jordan has an interesting way of waking his trainee.

He throws a bucket of water on him.

Once John is dressed, he immediately wants to discuss the previous day’s events.

Four aliens are dead.

Another tried to destroy Rushville.

Shouldn’t they contact the Guardians?

Hal has another priority.

John’s training.

Hal reminds John that he is in charge before handing him the Green Lantern ring.

Then he gives John his first instruction.

Fly.

John understandably wants to know if there is more to it.

Hal’s explanation isn’t particularly helpful.

He thinks about flying.

Then he flies.

John gives it a shot.

He doesn’t fly.

Instead, he creates a tiny green bird.

Hal doesn’t know exactly what to make of it.

But he’s impressed.

John Stewart may not understand how to use the ring yet, but he’s already demonstrating that his relationship with its power will be different from Hal’s.

John Stewart Creates the Green Bird

The bird becomes John’s first real manifestation of the Green Lantern’s power.

It also becomes his first lesson in concentration.

Hal’s ring alerts him that its power is running low, meaning they need the lantern to recharge it.

Hal sends John home to retrieve it.

Since John still can’t fly, his mentor provides a decidedly less heroic transportation option.

A plane ticket.

Hal also tells John to bring the bird with him.

That means John must maintain enough concentration to keep the construct alive throughout the trip.

What initially looks like Hal teasing his trainee is actually another test.

John isn’t simply learning how to create something with the ring.

He’s learning how to sustain it.

And that green bird is about to become much more useful than either man realizes.

Hal Jordan Investigates Rushville

While John leaves to retrieve the lantern, Hal returns to the investigation.

He heads back to the high school football field.

Something about the metal detectors installed there doesn’t make sense.

They aren’t working.

Hal then flies into town.

Rushville is strangely deserted.

Whatever happened with the aliens has clearly shaken the community, but Hal doesn’t get much time to investigate.

His ring finally runs out of power.

Hal drops from the sky.

The most powerful weapon in his possession has effectively become jewelry.

For the moment, Hal Jordan is grounded.

Rushville Wants Answers

The townspeople gather in a local hall to determine what happens next.

Hal sits beside Billy Macon, who informs him that the charges against him have been dropped.

After the explosion proved Hal’s suspicions correct, keeping him charged became difficult to justify.

But Hal has another question.

How did Billy’s father know those four men were aliens?

Billy claims he doesn’t know.

That answer doesn’t satisfy Hal.

The Lanterns Season 1 Episode 2 Recap continues revealing that William Macon may understand Rushville’s extraterrestrial problem far better than anyone has admitted.

Then John’s phone call gives Hal an excuse to leave the meeting.

Sheriff Kane has already warned him about taking calls during the proceedings.

Hal, unsurprisingly, does it anyway.

The Metal Detectors Aren’t Metal Detectors

While directing John toward the lantern, Hal makes another stop.

The morgue.

He steals the four alien bodies.

Hal takes them back to the football field and tests them against the supposedly malfunctioning metal detectors.

Suddenly, the truth becomes clear.

They aren’t metal detectors.

They’re alien detectors.

Someone installed technology at the football field specifically designed to identify extraterrestrial beings.

That changes the Rushville investigation completely.

The town didn’t simply experience a random alien encounter.

Someone apparently knew enough about extraterrestrials to prepare for their presence.

And William Macon may know exactly where that technology came from.

John Stewart Is Kidnapped

John retrieves the lantern from Hal’s house.

Before he can leave, he’s attacked.

A taser knocks him unconscious.

When John wakes, he’s inside a moving van.

His hands are zip-tied.

But he isn’t alone.

The green bird is still there.

John has maintained the construct even while unconscious.

Then the bird attacks.

John fights back against his captor, but something immediately feels wrong.

The man is extraordinarily strong.

He repeatedly slams John against the walls of the van.

John eventually forces him through the rear doors.

Both men tumble onto a highway filled with traffic.

John grabs the bag containing the lantern and runs.

Cars swerve around him.

Crashes erupt across the highway.

He almost escapes.

Then another van hits him.

John Stewart is going wherever these men want to take him.

Hal Confronts William Macon

Back in Rushville, Sheriff Kane stops Hal as he drives toward the Macon compound.

She suggests it would be in his best interest to return with her and participate in the discussion.

Hal agrees.

But once he gets there, he quickly turns the conversation into an interrogation of William Macon.

Hal wants to know where Macon’s alien-detection technology came from.

William refuses to answer.

He claims he’s prohibited from revealing either the source of the technology or the person who provided it because of a nondisclosure agreement.

That’s quite an NDA.

Hal keeps pushing.

William orders him off the property.

Then he threatens to shoot Hal for trespassing.

Hal walks toward him anyway.

A gun fires.

John Learns About the Manhunters

John wakes inside an empty warehouse.

Four men surround him.

One sits directly across from him.

The man’s first question isn’t about Hal.

It’s about the bird.

How is Hal manifesting the construct from so far away?

John corrects him.

Hal isn’t creating it.

John is.

The revelation stuns his captor.

John is apparently maintaining the bird without wearing the Green Lantern ring.

Then the conversation takes a darker turn.

The man asks John whether he knows about the Manhunters.

John doesn’t.

So his captor shows him.

Memories of the Manhunters’ atrocities are implanted directly into John’s mind.

According to the man, Manhunters are shape-shifting aliens responsible for exterminating alien races throughout the universe in the name of justice.

And one of them is hiding on Earth.

In Rushville.

John Stewart Has 48 Hours

John’s captor gives him an ultimatum.

He has 48 hours.

John must return to Rushville.

He must identify the Manhunter hiding there.

Then he must contact the men holding him.

If he fails, they will enter Rushville themselves.

And destroy the entire town.

The stakes of the investigation have just changed dramatically.

Hal and John are no longer trying simply to understand why aliens have appeared in Nebraska.

They’re hunting something allegedly capable of genocide.

And if they can’t find it quickly enough, the people searching for it are prepared to sacrifice everyone in Rushville.

At the heart of this Lanterns Season 1 Episode 2 Recap is an uncomfortable question.

What happens when everyone hunting the monster is willing to become one to stop it?

Hal Jordan Wakes Up in the Hospital

Hal wakes in a hospital bed.

He’s been shot through the shoulder.

He’s also handcuffed to the bed.

Sheriff Kane sits beside him.

Their conversation finally strips away some of the hostility between them.

Kane admits that she knows about Macon’s technology.

She’s been trying to maintain some semblance of authority in Rushville without allowing William Macon to accumulate even more power.

For once, Hal recognizes that he has overstepped.

He apologizes.

Then Kane asks him something unexpected.

Who is Sinestro?

Sheriff Kane Knows About Sinestro

Hal apparently mentioned Sinestro while unconscious.

He immediately shuts down.

He doesn’t want to talk about him.

But Kane already knows more than Hal realizes.

She knows Sinestro was once a Green Lantern.

She knows he turned against them.

And she knows Hal was forced to imprison him.

That revelation raises another question.

How does the sheriff of Rushville, Nebraska know this much about Green Lantern history?

Hal still refuses to discuss Sinestro.

Kane makes her point anyway.

Hal may not talk about Sinestro when he’s awake.

He certainly does when he’s asleep.

She removes Hal’s restraints.

Then she asks the question that has been hanging over his investigation.

Why is he still in Rushville?

Hal’s answer is simple.

Something feels wrong.

And he’s going to find out what it is.

John Finally Returns With the Lantern

John reaches Hal’s motel that night.

He has the lantern.

Hal recites the code and finally recharges his ring.

John has brought something else too.

A Green Lantern uniform.

Hal didn’t ask him to bring one.

John brought it anyway.

Then John tells Hal what happened.

He was kidnapped.

His captors told him about the Manhunter.

And he has 48 hours to find it.

Hal isn’t surprised that something happened to John.

He already suspected something was wrong.

Then he asks John whether he wants to report the situation to the Guardians.

John says no.

He’s following the chain of command.

He reported it to Hal.

It’s a small exchange, but an important one.

John may question Hal’s methods.

He may be learning how differently they approach being Green Lanterns.

But John still trusts him.

For now.

Hal Jordan Goes to Sinestro

Later that night, Hal finally puts on the Green Lantern uniform.

Then he flies away.

But he isn’t heading toward Rushville.

He’s going to prison.

Hal arrives at Sinestro’s cell.

The man Hal refuses to discuss may be the only person who can help him understand the threat John has just described.

Hal asks about the Manhunters.

Sinestro doesn’t minimize the danger.

They are the greatest threat to planets he has ever encountered.

Then Sinestro turns the conversation in an unexpected direction.

He asks about John Stewart.

And just like that, the mystery grows again.

Lanterns Season 1 Episode 2 Ending Explained

What are the Manhunters?

According to John’s captor, the Manhunters are shape-shifting aliens responsible for exterminating alien races throughout the universe in the name of justice. One is believed to be hiding in Rushville, making the town the center of a potentially planetary threat.

Why does John have only 48 hours?

The men who kidnap John demand that he identify the Manhunter hiding in Rushville within 48 hours. If he fails, they threaten to enter the town themselves and destroy it completely.

What are the detectors at the football field?

Hal discovers that the devices installed at the Rushville football field aren’t ordinary metal detectors. They are capable of detecting aliens. William Macon possesses the technology but refuses to reveal where it came from or who provided it.

How can John maintain the green bird without the ring?

The episode doesn’t explain how John is able to continue manifesting the green bird without physically possessing the Green Lantern ring. His captor is visibly surprised by the ability, suggesting John’s connection to Green Lantern power may be unusual.

Why does Sheriff Kane know about Sinestro?

The episode does not reveal how Sheriff Kane learned about Sinestro. She knows he was once a Green Lantern, turned against them, and was eventually imprisoned by Hal. Her knowledge suggests there may be considerably more to Kane and Rushville than Hal initially believed.

Who is Sinestro?

Sinestro is a former Green Lantern who turned against the Corps and was imprisoned by Hal Jordan. Hal avoids discussing him, but the Manhunter threat is serious enough to force Hal to seek his former ally’s knowledge.

Why does Sinestro ask about John Stewart?

The episode ends before Sinestro explains his interest in John. His immediate decision to ask about John after discussing the Manhunters suggests that John’s involvement may be more significant than either John or Hal currently understands.

Final Thoughts

Lanterns Season 1 Episode 2 Recap expands the Rushville mystery without abandoning what makes the series’ central partnership interesting.

John Stewart still can’t fly.

But he can create something Hal doesn’t understand.

He can maintain that construct without wearing the ring.

And when he’s kidnapped and threatened with the destruction of an entire town, he doesn’t run from the responsibility placed in front of him.

He reports to Hal.

That matters because “Trust Fall” is ultimately about exactly what its title suggests.

Trust.

John trusts Hal enough to follow his chain of command.

Sheriff Kane trusts Hal enough to reveal what she knows about Macon and Sinestro.

Hal trusts his instincts enough to remain in Rushville despite having no clear explanation for why the town feels wrong.

And eventually, Hal must place enough trust in someone from his past to ask for help.

Sinestro.

Meanwhile, the investigation keeps producing evidence that Rushville is anything but an ordinary Nebraska town.

Alien bodies.

Alien detectors.

A private militia possessing extraterrestrial technology.

A sheriff who knows the history of the Green Lantern Corps.

A Manhunter hiding somewhere among the population.

And now a 48-hour countdown that could end with the town’s destruction.

The pilot asked John Stewart to investigate the mystery Hal Jordan would eventually die trying to solve.

“Trust Fall” reveals just how deep that mystery may go.

Because the greatest danger in Rushville may not be finding the alien.

It may be discovering who has been standing beside them all along.
