Lanterns Season 1 Episode 1 Recap Begins in 1996

The story begins in 1996.

Young John Stewart is watching a television interview with Hal Jordan, already celebrated as the superhero known as Green Lantern.

John’s brothers quickly tell him to turn off the television.

Their father is coming home.

John switches it off before his father enters, but apparently not quickly enough.

His father takes him outside and places an apple on John’s head.

Then he asks his son a simple question.

Is he afraid?

John says no.

His father raises a gun.

He fires.

The bullet strikes the apple, but John never flinches.

Instead of anger or punishment, John’s father appears strangely proud. He embraces his son and leads him back inside.

The moment establishes something fundamental about John Stewart long before a Green Lantern ring ever finds its way onto his hand.

Fear does not control him.

Twenty Years Later, John Trains with Hal Jordan

The story jumps forward to 2016.

John waits patiently along the side of a road when a car comes speeding around the corner.

Hal Jordan is late.

Hal apologizes and attempts to explain himself, but John does not seem particularly bothered.

It’s fine.

Their conversation quickly shifts toward John’s Green Lantern training.

Then Hal decides to turn an ordinary drive into another lesson.

He removes his Green Lantern ring and places it on the dashboard.

Hal tells John to meet him at a taco stand farther up the road.

Then he jumps out of the moving car.

The car sails over a cliff.

John continues toward the taco stand as the ring suddenly delivers a cryptic message involving hail in Rushville, Nebraska.

Something is happening there.

And apparently, the ring wants them to know about it.

Hal Jordan Is Already a Celebrity

John reaches the taco stand and discovers that Hal has beaten him there.

Of course he has.

Hal is busy signing autographs and posing for photographs with customers.

John’s mentor is not simply another Green Lantern.

He’s famous.

Once they finally sit down, John places the ring on the table and tells Hal about the strange message.

Hal’s demeanor immediately changes.

He grabs the ring.

Then he tells John to pay the bill.

And flies away.

The Lanterns Season 1 Episode 1 Recap has officially turned from superhero training exercise into investigation.

Something Happened in Rushville

John eventually arrives in Rushville, Nebraska, where he finds Hal sitting alone in the bleachers of a high school football field.

The location was recently the scene of a shooting.

But Hal has a problem.

Local Sheriff Kerry Kane has effectively frozen him out of the investigation.

That leaves one of the world’s most famous superheroes sitting on the sidelines.

Literally.

Hal believes the shooting involved an alien.

The sheriff apparently isn’t interested in entertaining the theory.

Then John notices something.

A suspicious man is behaving strangely near the field.

John approaches Sheriff Kane to warn her.

The man realizes he has been spotted.

He runs.

John gives chase.

And catches him.

Suddenly, Sheriff Kane has a prisoner.

And Hal Jordan may have his alien.

Hal Jordan Has a Terrible Plan

Sheriff Kane refuses to allow Hal to question the mysterious suspect.

Naturally, Hal responds with the kind of carefully considered strategy one expects from an experienced intergalactic lawman.

He decides to get arrested.

If Hal can land himself in the same jail, he can question the prisoner directly.

There’s just one problem.

Sheriff Kane isn’t fooled.

She arrests Hal but makes certain he is kept away from the suspect.

Hal’s brilliant plan has accomplished exactly one thing.

Hal Jordan is now in jail.

The Macon Family Enters the Mystery

The following day, Hal is arraigned.

His attorney is Billy Macon, Sheriff Kerry Kane’s husband.

But another member of the Macon family quickly becomes even more important.

Billy’s father, William Macon, pays Hal’s bail.

William commands his own private militia and has some unusual ideas about what happened in Rushville.

In fact, William is even more convinced than Hal that aliens are involved.

That makes the two men unlikely allies.

William orders Sheriff Kane to arrange an interview between Hal and the mysterious prisoner.

This time, Hal finally gets what he wants.

Hal Proves the Prisoner Is an Alien

Hal sits down with the suspect.

His theory is about to be tested.

Is the man simply a strange individual caught near a crime scene?

Or is something extraterrestrial hiding beneath the surface?

Hal gets his answer.

Explosively.

The prisoner is an alien.

Whatever happened on the Rushville football field is no longer simply a local shooting investigation.

Something from beyond Earth is involved.

And the mystery has only begun.

Lanterns Jumps Forward to 2026

Then Lanterns makes its most important move.

The story jumps forward another decade.

It is now 2026.

John Stewart is driving back toward Rushville.

The landscape has changed.

Winter has buried the Nebraska town beneath snow.

John returns to the same football field where he and Hal investigated the shooting ten years earlier.

Sheriff Kane meets him.

Together, they walk toward the bleachers.

Something is waiting there.

John Stewart Finds Hal Jordan’s Body

A nearly frozen body sits in the bleachers.

There is a bullet hole in the man’s forehead.

John recognizes him.

It’s Hal Jordan.

The legendary Green Lantern is dead.

But there is another problem.

Hal isn’t wearing his ring.

The Lanterns Season 1 Episode 1 Recap ends by transforming everything we have just watched.

The events of 2016 are no longer merely the story of how John trained under Hal.

They may contain the answer to what happened to him ten years later.

Someone killed Hal Jordan.

Someone may have taken his ring.

And John Stewart has returned to Rushville to discover why.

Final Thoughts

Lanterns Season 1 Episode 1 Recap gives the DC Universe’s newest series a surprisingly grounded beginning.

There are Green Lantern rings.

There are aliens.

There are superheroes capable of flying away from a restaurant rather than sticking around to pay the check.

But beneath the cosmic mythology is a mystery.

The premiere uses three different periods to connect John Stewart’s childhood, his training under Hal Jordan, and the murder that brings him back to Rushville.

The structure also makes Hal’s death more than a cliffhanger.

We have just watched John learn from this man.

We’ve seen Hal’s confidence, celebrity, recklessness, and absolute certainty that something strange happened in Nebraska.

Then, ten years later, John finds him dead in the exact place where their investigation began.

The question isn’t simply who killed Hal Jordan?

It’s whether the answer was sitting in front of them all along.

And somewhere between the alien they discovered in 2016 and Hal’s frozen body in 2026 lies the mystery John Stewart must now solve.
