Why It Matters: “Trust Fall” transformed the Rushville investigation by revealing that a Manhunter is hiding among the town’s residents, giving John and Hal a potentially catastrophic threat to uncover before time runs out.

Show Primer
Lanterns follows new recruit John Stewart and veteran Green Lantern Hal Jordan as the two intergalactic lawmen investigate a dark mystery in the American heartland.
What began as an investigation into a deadly shooting in Rushville, Nebraska, has rapidly expanded into something with much larger implications. The series has used its grounded detective-story framework to gradually introduce the cosmic history surrounding the Green Lantern Corps without abandoning the central mystery.
Episode 2 cracked that door considerably wider.
John learned that a Manhunter is hiding in Rushville. The ancient synthetic enforcers were created by the Guardians of the Universe before the Green Lantern Corps, but their history ended catastrophically after they turned against organic life.
Meanwhile, Hal sought out someone who understands that history all too well.
Sinestro.

What We Know Going Into Episode 103
“Trust Fall” dramatically expanded the mythology surrounding the investigation.
John discovered that the extraterrestrial violence in Rushville is connected to a surviving Manhunter hidden somewhere in town. Even worse, he was given 48 hours to locate it before the aliens searching for the machine take catastrophic action against Rushville.
Hal responded to John’s revelation by leaving Earth for answers.
His destination was an intergalactic prison.
His source was Thaal Sinestro.
Episode 2 revealed that Sinestro was once a celebrated Green Lantern before his authoritarian actions on his homeworld led to his downfall. The person responsible for exposing him was his former trainee, Hal Jordan.
That’s quite a history to walk into when you need a favor.
And that’s where Lanterns Episode 103 Preview begins getting especially interesting.
Lanterns Episode 103 Preview: Who Is the OutKast?
The episode title is officially listed as “OutKast.” Current scheduling information confirms the installment for August 30, although a detailed official episode synopsis has not yet been published.
That makes the title our biggest clue.
And there are several candidates.
Sinestro is quite literally an outcast from the Green Lantern Corps.
The Manhunter is an artifact of a discarded generation of intergalactic law enforcement.
John remains an outsider navigating the culture and expectations surrounding his new role.
Even Hal increasingly appears isolated by secrets from his past.
“OutKast” could therefore describe one character.
Or it could describe all of them.
The mystery is becoming populated by people and machines that no longer belong where they started.
Sinestro Steps Into the Investigation
Episode 2’s closing moments introduced Ulrich Thomsen as Thaal Sinestro, instantly opening another dimension of Hal Jordan’s story.
The show’s creators have described their use of Sinestro as resembling the Hannibal Lecter dynamic in The Silence of the Lambs: an imprisoned figure whose knowledge makes him useful even when trusting him would be extraordinarily foolish.
That’s an excellent problem for Hal.
Sinestro isn’t merely another villain who happens to know something.
He’s part of Hal’s history.
Hal exposed his former mentor’s authoritarian rule, contributing to Sinestro’s imprisonment. Now Hal apparently needs information from the man he helped put behind bars.
Every answer Sinestro provides could therefore carry a price.
And Sinestro seems like someone who keeps receipts.
Lanterns Episode 103 Preview: The Manhunter Could Be Anyone
The most delicious element of the Manhunter revelation is its simplicity.
Someone in Rushville isn’t who they appear to be.
That transforms the series into a different kind of mystery.
Hal and John aren’t merely looking for evidence anymore. They’re looking at people.
Who behaves strangely?
Who knows more than they should?
Who has a history that doesn’t quite add up?
And who might have been living inside this community long enough to appear completely ordinary?
The Manhunters’ history makes the possibility particularly dangerous. They predate the Green Lantern Corps and were created by the Guardians as an earlier attempt at maintaining order before becoming a catastrophic failure.
The Green Lanterns aren’t simply hunting another alien.
They’re confronting one of the Corps’ oldest mistakes.
John Stewart Has 48 Hours
The countdown gives Episode 103 something the first two chapters didn’t possess.
A deadline.
John was warned that the Manhunter must be identified within 48 hours, or Rushville itself could face devastating consequences.
That immediately changes the pace of the investigation.
John cannot patiently gather evidence indefinitely.
Hal cannot spend days interrogating Sinestro.
And Sheriff Kerry cannot necessarily investigate this case according to normal procedure when the actual explanation involves extraterrestrial assassins and ancient robotic enforcers.
The clock is running.
That should put enormous pressure on John, who is still learning what being a Green Lantern actually requires.
His training isn’t finished.
The universe apparently doesn’t care.
Lanterns Episode 103 Preview: Hal’s Past Becomes John’s Problem
One of the most interesting developments in Lanterns has been the gradual realization that Hal isn’t simply teaching John how to become a Green Lantern.
John is inheriting Hal’s unfinished business.
Sinestro is perhaps the clearest example yet.
John didn’t create that relationship.
He didn’t expose Sinestro.
He wasn’t around for the decisions that shaped Hal’s history with the Corps.
But those decisions may now directly affect John’s ability to survive his first major investigation.
That’s an important evolution for their mentor-student relationship.
Hal possesses experience John desperately needs.
He also possesses baggage John may increasingly have to carry.
Rushville Becomes a Town of Suspects
The Manhunter revelation should fundamentally change how we view Rushville.
Until now, the town’s residents have primarily existed within the murder investigation.
Episode 103 can turn them into suspects.
Will Macon.
Zoe Macon.
Billy.
Sheriff Kerry.
Anyone whose behavior, history, or relationships don’t quite fit could suddenly acquire another meaning.
That doesn’t mean the series needs to turn every character into an obvious red herring. The better mystery would allow ordinary human secrets to exist alongside the extraterrestrial one.
Someone can be lying without being a robot.
Someone can be dangerous without being the Manhunter.
And somebody completely trustworthy might turn out not to be human at all.
Now Lanterns gets to play with all three possibilities.
Lanterns Episode 103 Preview: Why the Manhunters Matter
The Manhunters aren’t simply another obscure piece of DC mythology dropped into the series for longtime readers.
Their existence complicates the Green Lantern Corps itself.
The Guardians created them.
They failed.
Then the Guardians replaced them with the Green Lantern Corps.
That makes the Manhunter mystery partly about institutional history.
John is joining an organization whose predecessors made mistakes with enormous consequences. Hal has spent years operating within that institution and clearly possesses knowledge John doesn’t yet have.
The deeper John moves into the investigation, the more he may discover that becoming a Green Lantern requires understanding what the Corps would rather forget.
That’s much more interesting than simply finding the killer robot.
What to Watch For in “OutKast”
Watch Sinestro and Hal. Their conversation should reveal more than information about the Manhunter. Their history can tell us considerably more about the man Hal was before John became his trainee.
Watch John’s investigation in Rushville. With only 48 hours, his instincts may matter more than his still-developing ability to use the ring.
Watch the Macon family and other Rushville residents. Once we know a Manhunter may be hiding in plain sight, seemingly ordinary behavior suddenly becomes suspicious.
And watch the title.
“OutKast” may refer to Sinestro.
It may refer to the Manhunter.
It may refer to John.
By the end of Episode 103, it could mean something entirely different.
Final Thoughts
“Trust Fall” gave Lanterns the piece its mystery needed.
A suspect nobody can recognize.
Now Episode 103 gets to hunt it.
Lanterns Episode 103 Preview finds John Stewart and Hal Jordan confronting two sides of Green Lantern history. Somewhere in Rushville, a Manhunter is hiding among ordinary people. Somewhere far beyond Earth, Sinestro possesses information Hal desperately needs.
Both represent pieces of a past John barely understands.
And he has 48 hours to figure it out.
For a new Green Lantern, training is officially over.
