John Boyega discusses the conversation that changed his life in this sit-down interview with The Hollywood Reporter. Boyega also shares his thoughts on working with his future co-stars, being mentored by a super-hero and what Carrie Fisher advised him to avoid.

When the initial trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens dropped earlier this year, social media was immediately in a tizzy. There were some that were disappointed that a Black actor was not only prominently featured in the film but would later be revealed as its star.

Boyega, who was introduced to American audiences in the alien-thriller, Attack the Block, earned the opportunity of a lifetime by winning the role of Finn, described as “a redeemed First Order stormtrooper.” While merely auditioning for a role in one of his favorite films, Boyega was shocked when he stated Abrams exclaimed, “John, you’re the new star of Star Wars.”

The much-anticipated film, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, opens in theaters on December 18, 2015.
