Barbarella Project Moving Forward

Despite his film, Only God Forgives, getting booed over at Cannes, director Nicolas Winding Refn refuses to be deterred. He’s already focusing on his next project, a remake of one our favorite films, Barbarella.

Since the announcement last year that the film would be coming back to the big screen, everyone has wondered and waited for the official word on who will play the character made famous onscreen by Jane Fonda. Danish director Refn is one of the key people who will have the final word.

When asked if he had someone in mind for the “Fonda” role he replied: “No, I haven’t started casting yet.”

“We are just writing it still,” Refn said. “I kind of went back to the original comic, and really began to close my eyes and fantasize about women in outer space and it looked pretty good.”

The series will be executive produced by Martha De Laurentiis and written by Neal Purvis and Robert Wade, who have co-written the last five James Bond films. There is no word yet on when or where this updated Barbarella will air, but we will let you know.

This new series will reportedly take its inspiration from the original comic book created by Jean-Claude Forest instead of the 1968 film starring Fonda.

Long one of our favs because of its sheer camp factor and Fonda’s willingness to not take herself too seriously, we’ve always dreamed about seeing this film updated with a contemporary feel. Robert Rodriquez initially wanted to helm the film with his girlfriend, Rose McGowan in the title role. Rodriquez has abandoned the project and hence Refn.
