One of the under-the-radar films from the 2016 Sundance Film Festival will finally see the light of the day as writer/director J.D. Dillard’s magic sci-fi thriller, Sleight hits theaters later this month.
In the film a young street magician (Jacob Latimore) is left to care for his little sister after their parents passing and turns to illegal activities to keep a roof over their heads. When he gets in too deep, his sister is kidnapped and he is forced to use his magic and brilliant mind to save her.
Sleight had the disadvantage of premiering at Sundance among an unusually crowded field of films which included the much-ballyhooed The Birth of A Nation, as well as other festival favorites Miles Ahead, Southside With You, and Morris From America and simply was overlooked.
One of the hottest producers in film right now, Jason Blum and his BH Tilt production will serve as one of the producers of the film and they are hoping that Sleight can join earlier hits Get Out and Split, which surprised audiences earlier this year.
The film stars Jacob Latimore, Seychelle Gabriel, Dulé Hill, Storm Reid, Sasheer Zamata and Michael Villar.
Sleight hits area theaters on April 28, 2017.
