Lies Collapse and Jonathan Pine Is Exposed
As lies unravel and power plays collide across continents, Richard Roper’s empire turns into a battlefield with no escape, and Jonathan Pine is finally exposed in Episode 4 of The Night Manager.
Angela Burr’s Illusion Shatters
The episode opens in quiet contrast, with Angela Burr enjoying her carefully cultivated “retirement” in Pau, France. Walking with her daughter and dog, she appears at peace until a secure message shatters the illusion. Alone in her bedroom, Angela opens her laptop to find a blunt question from Jonathan Pine: Why did you lie to me? Attached is a photograph of Richard Roper, very much alive. Angela’s composure collapses instantly.
Secrets Resurface in London
In London, Mayra uncovers one of Rex’s files identifying Jonathan Pine by his real name, Andrew Birch. The discovery triggers memories of Rex’s mysterious fund, prompting her to question Basil. Basil deflects, reminding her that she told him the name, not the other way around. After Mayra leaves, Basil monitors his secret surveillance feed and spots her meeting with Sandy Langhorne and Adam Holywell. He now understands who the real players are.
At London’s Mayfair Club, Basil informs Holywell of a security breach during the previous night’s meeting, admitting his phone was compromised. He reassures Holywell that Mayra remains unaware and offers to clean Holywell’s phone himself.
Roper and Teddy’s Dangerous Alliance
In Colombia, Teddy quietly descends a stairwell and observes the scars on Roper’s back as he sleeps. He switches off the light, earning a sharp rebuke when it wakes Roper. Later, Roper gazes out at the early morning landscape, sensing unseen eyes. He is right. Jonathan watches from a distant hillside through binoculars.
Morning brings a tense breakfast and a promise. Roper agrees to finally explain what happened to him, but only outside the house. On horseback overlooking the mountains, Roper reflects on Colombia’s beauty and its function as his gilded cage. Teddy outlines his plan: bribe officials, replace the prosecutor, release the shipment, and unfreeze the funds. Roper agrees and indulges Teddy’s ambition. Teddy wants the world to know who he truly is. Roper smiles and promises they will be kings of America together, provided the shipment arrives on time.
Back at the house, Roper quietly activates his network. A man codenamed Mr. Whistler is summoned, and surveillance tightens.
The Net Tightens
Teddy handles loose ends by escorting Matthew to the airport. Matthew whispers that he will pray for him, and Teddy leaves him at security. Once Teddy is out of sight, Matthew doubles back just in time to see Angela Burr arrive.
Elsewhere, the prosecutor’s escape unfolds with surgical precision. Sally creates a diversion, shielding him from Teddy’s men long enough for him to disappear. Teddy soon realizes he has been outmaneuvered and orders an immediate manhunt.
Jonathan confronts Angela at the airport, demanding the truth. Angela admits that Roper threatened her life and her daughter’s to ensure her silence. Jonathan vows to expose everything, but Angela insists they must finish the mission. Too many powerful figures are involved. Jonathan walks away, unwilling to compromise again.
Empire Revealed
In Colombia, Martin executes a daring surveillance maneuver by feeding meat to guard dogs and attaching microphones to their collars. What he overhears is staggering. Roper reveals his true ambition is not revenge, but empire. With British backing, he plans to destabilize Colombia and then expand across the continent.
The walls close in quickly. Roxana, now under suspicion, manages to secretly warn Jonathan about the trap awaiting the prosecutor. It is too late. Prosecutor Gualteros is seized by military forces, betrayed from within, and delivered directly to Teddy, who executes him without hesitation.
As Teddy’s men prepare to kill a child witness, gunfire erupts. Matthew appears, rescues the boy, and escapes on a motorcycle. Teddy recognizes him. Moments later, Roxana is freed when Juan is gunned down by Matthew, who speeds away with her and the witness.
Roper Learns the Truth
At last, the truth reaches Roper. At his request, a fax prints a photograph of his tormentor: Jonathan Pine. Roper stares at it with cold fury, realizing the man who once trapped him has returned.
