Jonathan Pine Returns Under a New Identity
by Charles Kirkland, Jr.
Presumed dead, Jonathan Pine is back on the case. With a new identity and a new crew, he travels to Colombia to get close enough to Teddy Dos Santos to finally take him down.
The Fallout of Night Owl
The episode opens with Mayra Cavendish presiding over a tribunal interrogation of Sally Price-Jones. Mayra reminds Sally that the Night Owl Project was authorized strictly for surveillance, not direct action. Sally defends herself by claiming she acted under orders from her superior, Alex Goodwin. Mayra rejects the explanation, suspends Sally from duty, and formally announces the termination of the Night Owl Project. Sally exits as the consequences of the failed operation begin to sink in.
Alex Lives and a New Plan Takes Shape
The story then shifts to the coast of Wales, where Alex stands alone on the beach, watching the waves. When he returns to a nearby house, he finds Basil Karapetian inside, calmly making tea. Basil reveals that he orchestrated Alex’s apparent death by reporting two bodies found at the hotel instead of one. When Alex questions why Basil calls him Jonathan, Basil admits he knows his true identity and explains that Rex Mayhew tasked him years earlier with creating Jonathan Pine’s new cover. Basil offers his help with whatever Alex plans next.
Sally soon joins them, bringing critical intelligence on Teddy Dos Santos. She confirms that she tipped off the Colombian government, leading to the seizure of Teddy’s most recent shipment. Together, they devise a new cover identity. Jonathan Pine will now operate as Matthew Ellis, a wealthy international financier. His mission is to travel to Colombia, dismantle Teddy’s arms operation, and expose his connections to government officials. Sally accompanies Matthew to Colombia, while Basil remains in London.
Infiltrating Teddy’s World
In Colombia, Matthew waits on a tennis court for a lesson when another player approaches. Told the instructor is not coming, Matthew prepares to leave but agrees to play a match with the man, who introduces himself as Juan. After a brief exchange, Matthew proposes a wagered set. When Teddy arrives and watches, Matthew deliberately throws the match, erupting in visible frustration. Intrigued, Teddy introduces himself. Matthew presents himself as a high-level banking financier, prompting Teddy to invite him to a fundraiser for his charity, the Aurora Foundation.
Mayra Tightens the Net
Back in London, Basil attends Rex Mayhew’s funeral. After the service, Mayra confronts him and presses for information about Alex. She explains that she is conducting a formal investigation and demands access to Rex’s files. Basil agrees to cooperate, delivering multiple boxes of records to Mayra. Once she has them, Basil quietly establishes surveillance on her from a house across the street.
Threats, Revelations, and Betrayal
At Teddy’s fundraiser, Matthew notices similarities between the Aurora Foundation and charities previously used by Richard Roper. Teddy introduces Matthew to Roxana, and both struggle to maintain composure. When Teddy steps away, Matthew threatens Roxana, warning that unless she cooperates, he will ensure she is prosecuted for the murders of his former team. Roxana denies any knowledge of the seized shipment. Matthew admits he was responsible for flagging it and freezing Teddy’s company accounts, then tasks Roxana with convincing Teddy to seek Matthew’s financial backing.
Further investigation reveals Teddy’s true identity. Jonathan tells Sally that Teddy Dos Santos is actually Eduardo Vidal, the son of Richard Roper. Shortly after, Roxana calls and says she has secured Matthew access to Teddy but demands safe passage back to Miami in exchange. She believes Teddy will kill her if he learns of her betrayal. Matthew agrees and instructs her to proceed.
A Dangerous Acceptance
Roxana brings Matthew to Teddy’s home for a private meeting. Teddy offers Matthew an opportunity to double his money in a no-questions-asked deal. Matthew says he will consider it. The night devolves into heavy partying, with drinking and dancing stretching late into the evening. Roxana notices one of Teddy’s men slip something into Matthew’s champagne. Before she can stop him, Matthew drinks and collapses into the pool.
Drugged and disoriented but maintaining his cover, Jonathan claims he is in Colombia to launder twenty-five million dollars in stolen funds. Satisfied, Teddy accepts Matthew as a partner, confirming that they can now do business together.
