One More Win

Richmond begins the episode looking nothing like a team on the verge of promotion. The performance on the pitch is uninspired, the crowd is subdued, and Gemma’s premature return from injury only reinforces how desperately the Lady Greyhounds need something to change. She is clearly eager to help, but wanting to play and being ready to play are two different things.

Ted refuses to let the team’s struggles alter his public confidence. With Richmond needing only one more victory to secure promotion, he meets the postgame press with the familiar folksy optimism that has carried him through countless difficult moments. Behind the scenes, however, the coaching staff knows something has to change before the upcoming match against Bristol City WFC.

Beard’s increasingly youthful transformation provides some comic relief as the coaches experiment with a new formation. More importantly, Alice continues evolving into a more communicative teacher. The hard edges that defined her early relationship with the players haven’t disappeared completely, but she is learning that authority doesn’t require emotional distance.

That growth becomes even clearer when Alice leaves the office and discovers Shannon training alone on the pitch. The message has gotten through. Alice isn’t merely demanding more from her players anymore. She is learning how to make them want more from themselves.

Keeley Gets Life-Changing News

While Richmond worries about promotion, Keeley discovers that her own future may be changing dramatically. After briefly fainting in the stands, she gets checked out and learns that she may be pregnant.

What follows is less about the mechanics of taking multiple pregnancy tests than Keeley’s inability to immediately share the news with Roy. She hides the evidence and carries on with her evening, caught between the excitement of what might be happening and the uncertainty of what motherhood could mean for the life she has built.

Rebecca, naturally, figures it out.

When Keeley admits that she is happy, the two women erupt in celebration. It’s a wonderfully fitting moment for a friendship that has consistently given both characters a place where vulnerability doesn’t require explanation. Yet Keeley’s happiness doesn’t eliminate her questions. When Roy later visits her office, she still can’t bring herself to tell him.

That hesitation becomes particularly meaningful considering how far their relationship has traveled. Keeley isn’t simply wondering whether she wants a child. She is contemplating what becoming a mother means for her future and whether Roy truly belongs inside that future.

Ted Lasso Season 4 Episode 9 Recap Finds Alice Learning to Listen

Gemma receives medical clearance before the Bristol City match, but the real test isn’t whether she can return. It’s whether Alice can recognize when her player has had enough.

Ted, meanwhile, makes another characteristically unconventional decision. After learning about Mae’s travel anxiety, he invites her to join the Lady Greyhounds on the team bus. Mae’s presence initially feels like another example of Ted understanding that Richmond is more than the people officially employed by the club. Before the match, he gives her the floor, allowing one of Richmond’s most enduring supporters to deliver the speech that sends the Lady Greyhounds onto the pitch.

Bristol City quickly puts Richmond under pressure, scoring twice before Gemma finally enters the match. Almost immediately, she goes down following a tackle, creating the frightening possibility that her return has come too soon. Gemma gets back up and converts a penalty to bring Richmond closer, but Alice notices what everyone else may be too desperate to acknowledge.

Gemma isn’t right.

At halftime, Alice tells her she shouldn’t continue. Crucially, Gemma agrees. Their exchange demonstrates how much their relationship has changed. Earlier in the season, the moment might have become another battle between a stubborn player and an equally stubborn coach. Now they listen to each other.

Trust has replaced confrontation.

Richmond Finds Another Way

With Gemma unable to continue, Ted turns to Shannon. Before sending her onto the pitch, Alice loosens her up with a dance move, another small indication that this version of Alice understands coaching requires more than tactics.

Beard has his own unconventional solution for Quinn, convincing her to change gloves in hopes that something new will restore her confidence. It works. Quinn’s save provides the spark Richmond needs, and the Lady Greyhounds find an equalizer to send the match into overtime.

Then everything begins clicking.

Lizzie Davis scores what appears to be the decisive goal, but Richmond isn’t finished. Quinn’s outlet finds Shannon, who adds another goal and completes the comeback.

The Lady Greyhounds are going to the Super League.

It’s the culmination of everything Ted and Alice have been building throughout the season. Richmond doesn’t win because one player rescues everyone. Gemma contributes before recognizing her limitations. Alice trusts her instincts. Shannon takes advantage of her opportunity. Quinn rediscovers her confidence. The team earns promotion precisely because it has finally learned how to depend on everyone.

Zelda Makes Her Move

While Richmond celebrates on the pitch, Rebecca is facing a very different battle.

Higgins receives word from Rupert’s lawyer that the sale of the club’s shares has paused. As long as the Milk sisters retain their stake, Rebecca maintains control of AFC Richmond. Unfortunately, Higgins has been unable to locate them, leaving the identity of the person maneuvering behind the scenes unresolved.

Until now.

The person behind the acquisition of the missing shares is Zelda.

Her apparent attempt to take Richmond from Rebecca dramatically reframes her presence around the club and turns what had seemed like an eccentric addition to Rebecca’s circle into a direct threat to everything Rebecca has built.

With only one episode remaining, Richmond has secured its sporting future while its ownership suddenly appears more uncertain than ever.

Keeley Finally Tells Roy

Keeley spends the match at home after Rebecca forbids her from watching, but Roy arrives to make sure those instructions are followed. Naturally, Keeley finds a way to watch anyway and eventually persuades him to join her.

Their afternoon together gives Keeley something she hasn’t necessarily been looking for: evidence.

Roy is attentive, patient, and surprisingly sweet. He even turns Keeley’s makeup kit into an improvised tactical board while explaining what is happening on the pitch. The gesture is funny, but what matters is how comfortable they are together.

After Richmond secures promotion, Keeley finally tells him.

She’s pregnant.

The moment lands after an episode spent watching Keeley contemplate motherhood largely by herself. Her decision to include Roy suggests that whatever uncertainty remains, she is no longer willing to keep this part of her future separate from him.

Ted Lasso Season 4 Episode 9 Ending Explained

Who is trying to acquire the Richmond shares?

The episode reveals that Zelda is behind the effort to acquire the missing shares. Higgins had believed Rebecca could maintain control as long as the Milk sisters didn’t sell, but the revelation that Zelda is making a move for the club transforms her from Rebecca’s unconventional ally into a potential adversary heading into the finale.

What happens to Mae?

Richmond’s promotion celebration is abruptly interrupted when Rebecca receives word that Mae has died.

The timing makes the revelation particularly devastating. Mae has just traveled with the team, delivered the pregame speech, and witnessed the Lady Greyhounds secure promotion to the Super League. What initially seemed like a charming opportunity to bring one of the show’s most beloved supporting figures along for Richmond’s journey becomes her farewell.

Rebecca approaches Ted while the team continues dancing and celebrating. From a distance, we watch her deliver the news. Ted lowers his head in grief.

There is no speech and no attempt to immediately transform the loss into a lesson. The celebration continues around them while two people quietly absorb the reality that someone who embodied Richmond’s community is gone.

Final Thoughts

“Mae Rides the Bus” builds its emotional power around two ideas that rarely coexist comfortably: arrival and departure. Richmond finally reaches the Super League after a season spent building the Lady Greyhounds from the ground up, while Alice’s decision to remove Gemma demonstrates that winning no longer requires sacrificing the people responsible for making victory possible.

Elsewhere, Keeley’s pregnancy opens an entirely new future with Roy just as Zelda threatens the future Rebecca believed she had secured for Richmond. Nearly every major storyline is moving forward, yet Mae’s death reminds everyone that progress doesn’t prevent loss.

The decision to put Mae on the bus ultimately gives the episode its emotional meaning. She gets to leave the Crown & Anchor, become part of the team’s journey, speak directly to the players, and witness Richmond achieve something new before her death. For a character who has represented the club’s history and its supporters from the beginning, her final day becomes inseparable from one of Richmond’s greatest.

The Lady Greyhounds have earned promotion. Keeley and Roy may be starting a family. Rebecca may be fighting for her club. And Ted enters the season finale confronting something belief cannot fix.

Sometimes moving forward also means saying goodbye.
