Dark Matter Episode 206 Preview: What the Universe Is Made Of Brings the Dessens Back to the Future

After stepping away from Jason 1 and his family to tell the story of another Jason who learned how to begin again, Dark Matter returns to its central characters with a question that has been hiding beneath the multiverse from the beginning: What is a life actually made of?

“What the Universe Is Made Of” offers three deceptively simple developments: Amanda encounters someone from her past, Jason pursues his dream and Leighton unveils a new project. Each points toward something Dark Matter has spent much of Season 2 exploring. The Box may allow people to cross between realities, but changing worlds hasn’t allowed anyone to escape the choices that created those worlds in the first place.

“Love and Be Loved” made that idea explicit through an alternate Jason who finally stopped searching for another version of Daniela. After losing his family, he entered a reality where his mother was still alive, built a new life and eventually allowed himself to love someone else. His story offered a striking counterpoint to Jason 1, whose fixation on controlling the dangers surrounding the Box contributed to the fracture of his own family.

The Dark Matter Episode 206 Preview returns to Jason, Amanda and Leighton at a moment when all three appear ready to pursue something beyond the lives they previously had. Jason is looking toward a dream instead of another emergency, Amanda’s past suddenly intersects with the future she is trying to navigate, and Leighton appears ready to turn the possibilities of the Box into something larger. Together, those stories could push Season 2 beyond the question of what happens when people discover alternate lives and toward what they choose to create after seeing them.

Jason Finally Has Something to Build

Jason Dessen has spent most of Dark Matter trying to recover, protect or preserve something. Season 1 turned him into a man desperately trying to get home, while Season 2 complicated that victory by demonstrating that returning to his family didn’t restore the life they had before Jason 2 abducted him. Daniela and Charlie survived their own versions of that experience, and neither could simply return to being the people Jason remembered.

Jason’s response has frequently been to retreat toward the one thing he understands best: science. When the Box remained dangerous, he tried to destroy it. When destroying it proved insufficient, he returned to his equations. Even as his marriage deteriorated in “Stars, Hide Your Fires,” Jason remained convinced there had to be another problem he could solve. That’s what makes the suggestion that Jason will pursue his dream particularly intriguing. For perhaps the first time this season, his story isn’t being framed around stopping a threat or recovering something that has been lost.

For much of the series, Jason’s dreams have been defined by the road he didn’t take. Before the Box entered his life, he sometimes wondered about the scientific career he surrendered when he chose Daniela and their family. Jason 2 represented the opposite decision, pursuing professional achievement only to become consumed by the family life he sacrificed to obtain it. Jason 1 has now seen where both paths can lead, which gives the Dark Matter Episode 206 Preview an opportunity to explore whether he can finally stop treating ambition and family as mutually exclusive realities.

That shift gives the Dark Matter Episode 206 Preview a different kind of momentum, allowing Jason’s ambition to become part of his future rather than another reminder of the life he might have lived. The Box was born from the question of what another life could look like, but Jason’s next challenge may be learning how to build the life he wants without opening another door to find it.

Amanda’s Past Could Complicate Her Future

Amanda Lucas has experienced the multiverse differently from nearly everyone else in Dark Matter. She didn’t enter the Box searching for another version of her life. She escaped alongside Jason after recognizing what Jason 2 had become, eventually sacrificing the possibility of returning home so Jason could continue searching for Daniela and Charlie.

Her decision to remain in another reality at the end of Season 1 initially appeared to give Amanda something resembling a fresh start. Ryan’s arrival complicated that possibility, while Season 2 has continued demonstrating that neither character can completely separate a new life from everything that happened before it.

Episode 6 now brings Amanda face-to-face with someone from her past. The identity and significance of that person remain crucial unknowns heading into “What the Universe Is Made Of,” but the timing makes the encounter especially interesting. Amanda has already experienced what it means to abandon one reality and attempt to belong in another. Someone connected to her past potentially challenges the idea that simply crossing into a different world allows anyone to begin again without consequences.

For Amanda, the Dark Matter Episode 206 Preview turns that encounter into another variation on the season’s central question: what happens when the past suddenly becomes part of a future you thought you had already chosen?

That also makes Amanda an intriguing counterpart to the alternate Jason featured in “Love and Be Loved.” He eventually discovered that moving forward didn’t require forgetting the people he had lost. Amanda may now have to confront the reverse problem: whether the appearance of something familiar from her past changes the life she has been trying to construct in the present.

Leighton’s New Project Could Change the Scale of the Box

Leighton Vance represents a very different relationship with possibility. Jason has increasingly learned to fear what the Box can do, while Leighton has always been fascinated by what it makes possible. That distinction has existed since Velocity, where his resources helped transform Jason 2’s breakthrough from a scientific experiment into something with potentially enormous implications.

Access to infinite realities means access to more than alternate versions of familiar people. It potentially means technologies, resources and discoveries unavailable in a traveler’s original world. Jason and Amanda largely experienced those possibilities on an individual level, but Leighton possesses the money and institutional reach to imagine something considerably larger.

Now he’s unveiling a new project. Exactly what that project entails remains one of Episode 6’s major questions, making it important not to assume that it involves another Box or organized multiverse travel. Leighton’s history, however, makes the development significant because he has consistently approached the Box not simply as a scientific achievement but as an opportunity.

The Dark Matter Episode 206 Preview consequently places Jason and Leighton on potentially intersecting trajectories. One man appears to be pursuing a dream after learning what unchecked possibility can cost, while the other is introducing a project after discovering exactly how much possibility exists.

That possibility expands the stakes of the Dark Matter Episode 206 Preview, particularly if Leighton’s ambitions begin transforming the Box from one man’s extraordinary invention into something other people can exploit. Season 2 could then move beyond the consequences of individuals crossing between worlds and begin considering what happens when access to the multiverse becomes something larger than one person’s secret.

Why “Love and Be Loved” Matters to Episode 6

At first glance, “Love and Be Loved” appeared to interrupt the season’s primary storyline. Instead of continuing immediately with Jason, Daniela, Charlie, Amanda or Leighton, Episode 5 followed another Jason across years of his life. Yet placing that story directly before “What the Universe Is Made Of” gives his journey additional thematic significance.

That Jason began with the same belief that has haunted nearly every version of the character: the life he lost was irreplaceable. Daniela, Charlie and Max represented home, and without them he initially saw little reason to continue. His reunion with his mother gradually challenged that assumption. He built furniture, welcomed other displaced Jasons into their home, fell in love with Maria and eventually encountered that world’s Daniela without trying to reclaim her. For perhaps the first time, Dark Matter showed a Jason who understood that accepting another life didn’t require pretending his original one never mattered.

That lesson arrives immediately before Jason 1 begins pursuing his own dream. The connection gives the Dark Matter Episode 206 Preview an opportunity to ask whether the central Jason can reach the same understanding without needing another trip through the Box. He has spent years surrounded by proof that another life always exists somewhere, but Episode 5 argued that knowing another life exists doesn’t mean you need to live it.

Sometimes the meaningful choice is building something in the reality where you already are.

What Is the Universe Made Of?

The episode’s title sounds like a question Jason the physicist should be uniquely qualified to answer. The Box exists because he discovered a way to interact with realities normally inaccessible to human experience, making the composition of the universe more than an abstract question. Yet Dark Matter has rarely been interested in science without connecting it to the people living inside that science.

Its multiverse isn’t merely composed of matter, probability and quantum mechanics. Every reality represents decisions made and decisions avoided, relationships formed and relationships lost. Every Jason carries memories of people he loved, while every Amanda has theoretically been shaped by choices and circumstances another version never experienced. The universe of Dark Matter may be built from infinite possibilities, but the series has increasingly argued that those possibilities mean very little without the choices people make once they encounter them.

That’s what makes the three Episode 6 storylines fit together so naturally. Amanda encounters her past while navigating a life created by extraordinary circumstances. Jason pursues a dream after spending much of his life wondering about the road not taken. Leighton unveils something new after gaining firsthand knowledge of what exists beyond the reality everyone else accepts as fixed. Each character is confronting possibility from a different direction, and each must decide what to do with it.

Taken together, the Dark Matter Episode 206 Preview suggests “What the Universe Is Made Of” is less concerned with discovering another reality than with what Jason, Amanda and Leighton decide to do with the possibilities already in front of them.

Six episodes into Season 2, Dark Matter has expanded beyond the original question of whether Jason can protect his family from another version of himself. Ryan and Amanda are navigating their own changed circumstances, Charlie is beginning an independent life, Daniela is rediscovering herself, Jason 2 has confronted some of the damage created by his choices and Leighton continues pursuing the possibilities offered by the Box. The multiverse remains the mechanism connecting those stories, but it no longer has to be their destination.

Jason spent Season 1 believing happiness depended upon finding exactly the right world. “Love and Be Loved” offered another possibility: perhaps happiness comes from deciding what to build after the world you wanted disappears.

The Dark Matter Episode 206 Preview now places Jason in position to confront the same idea. After everything he’s seen behind those infinite doors, the most important discovery Jason Dessen can make may have nothing to do with finding another universe.

It may be deciding what he wants to create in this one.
