Ted Lasso Season 4 Episode 9 Explained: What Mae Leaves Behind

For most of “Mae Rides the Bus,” Ted Lasso appears headed toward celebration. The Lady Greyhounds are one victory away from promotion, Gemma is back on the pitch, Keeley is contemplating an unexpected future, and Alice Chilton is becoming the coach Ted always believed she could be.

Then Richmond wins, and Mae Green dies.

That collision between triumph and loss transforms the penultimate episode of Season 4. Richmond earns promotion, but the victory becomes inseparable from losing one of the people who best represented what the club has always meant. At the same time, Keeley’s pregnancy potentially opens a new chapter with Roy, Alice demonstrates how profoundly Ted has influenced her, and Zelda’s betrayal threatens the Richmond family Rebecca has spent years building.

Mae Green’s Last Ride

Mae has never needed an office at Nelson Road to belong to AFC Richmond. From behind the bar at the Crown & Anchor, she represented the supporters who remain when players leave, managers change, and victories give way to defeats. She was part of the club’s history long before Ted arrived.

That makes Mae’s journey one of the most poignant elements of Ted Lasso Season 4 Episode 9 Explained, especially when Ted invites her onto the team bus. After learning about her travel anxiety, he doesn’t ask her to conquer her fear before joining them. He simply makes room for her. Mae travels with the Lady Greyhounds, enters their locker room, delivers a rousing pregame speech, and gets to witness Richmond earn promotion.

Her death immediately afterward turns the journey into a farewell. Mae spent years watching Richmond from behind the bar. On her final day, she finally gets to ride with them.

What Mae’s Death Means for Ted and Richmond

Rebecca telling Ted about Mae while the Lady Greyhounds celebrate creates one of the episode’s most powerful contrasts. Around him, Richmond has accomplished exactly what he returned to help them achieve. Then Ted lowers his head as celebration and grief suddenly occupy the same moment.

Mae’s loss should resonate deeply because the Crown & Anchor became part of Ted’s adopted home. She watched him arrive as an outsider, endure relegation, rebuild Richmond, leave England, and eventually return. Losing her means losing another piece of the Richmond he came back to.

The larger loss belongs to the entire club. Mae connected Richmond to the supporters beyond Nelson Road, the people whose loyalty isn’t determined by contracts or league tables. The Crown & Anchor will remain, and Richmond will continue, but both will feel different without the woman who represented their permanence.

Keeley and Roy Have a New Future to Consider

While Mae’s story is about an ending, Ted Lasso Season 4 Episode 9 Explained uses Keeley’s pregnancy to introduce the possibility of a beginning. Her relationship with Roy has spent years caught between love, separation, and the realization that neither has completely moved beyond the other. Now they face something capable of changing both of their lives.

What matters is how Roy behaves before he knows. He isn’t making grand declarations or trying to convince Keeley to take him back. He simply shows up, stays with her, and demonstrates a patience that the younger Roy might not have possessed. Keeley eventually telling him she’s pregnant feels significant because she is choosing to include him in an uncertain future.

Pregnancy doesn’t automatically reunite them, but it creates an entirely different bond. The question is no longer simply whether Roy and Keeley still love one another. It’s whether everything they’ve learned apart has finally prepared them to build something together.

Alice Is Finally Coaching Like Alice

Alice’s transformation becomes another important piece of Ted Lasso Season 4 Episode 9 Explained, revealing that Ted’s greatest achievement with the Lady Greyhounds may be helping Alice discover her own coaching identity. He never tried to create another version of himself. Instead, he gave Alice permission to discover what his philosophy looked like when filtered through her personality.

We see the result against Bristol City. Alice recognizes Shannon’s effort, loosens her up with a dance before sending her into the match, and most importantly understands when Gemma has reached her limit. Earlier in the season, removing Gemma might have produced another confrontation. This time, Alice tells her what she sees and Gemma listens.

Ted has taught Alice that empathy doesn’t weaken authority. She can still be intense, demanding, funny, competitive, and unmistakably herself while listening to her players. The BELIEVE AND WIN sign captured the evolution perfectly: Alice didn’t replace Ted’s philosophy. She added herself to it.

Zelda Threatens More Than Rebecca’s Ownership

The revelation that Zelda is attempting to take control of Richmond makes her betrayal personal. Higgins’ investigation appeared to point toward Rupert, but the real threat was already inside Rebecca’s orbit.

That distinction matters. Rupert represented the life Rebecca escaped. Zelda threatens the life she built afterward.

Richmond is no longer simply an asset Rebecca owns. It has become the home of Ted, Keeley, Higgins, Roy, Beard, Alice, the Lady Greyhounds, and generations of supporters. It was Mae’s home too. On the same day Rebecca loses someone who embodied that community, she discovers someone else is trying to take control of the institution holding it together.

For Ted Lasso Season 4 Episode 9 Explained, Zelda’s betrayal raises the stakes beyond a fight over ownership. Heading into the season finale, Rebecca isn’t simply protecting her shares in AFC Richmond. She’s fighting to protect the family that Richmond has become.

Beyond the Episode

Ultimately, Ted Lasso Season 4 Episode 9 Explained is about beginnings and endings existing side by side as “Mae Rides the Bus” brings the season to the edge of its finale. Keeley’s pregnancy points toward a new life, Alice demonstrates how Ted’s influence can continue through someone else, and Zelda threatens Rebecca’s future with Richmond. Mae’s death, meanwhile, reminds everyone that even the people who seem permanent eventually leave us.

Mae’s importance was never measured by screen time. She represented the comforting idea that whatever happened at AFC Richmond, she would still be behind the bar when everyone returned to the Crown & Anchor.

This time, Mae didn’t wait for Richmond to come home.

She rode with them.
