Writer/director Charles Stone III’s latest film, Lila & Eve was picked up by Samuel Goldwyn Films after debuting at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year.

The film, which stars Viola Davis and Jennifer Lopez, tells the story of a grief stricken mother (Davis), who in the aftermath of her son’s murder in a drive-by shooting, attends a support group where she meets Eve (Lopez), who has lost her daughter. When Lila hits numerous roadblocks from the police in bringing justice for her son’s slaying, Eve urges Lila to take matters into her own hands to track down her son’s killers. The two women soon embark on a killing spree of their own, as they work to the top of the chain of drug dealers to avenge the murder of Lila’s son.

Directed by Film Independent Spirit Award nominee Stone (Drumline, Crazy Sexy Cool: The TLC Story), Lila & Eve also features Shea Whigham, Julius Tennon, Aml Ameen, Andre Royo and Yolonda Ross, who will play as a member of a “Mothers of Lost Children” support group, which helps women who have lost children to violence. Ameen plays Viola’s son in the film, Whigham plays as Detective Holliston, who is investigating Lila and Eve’s crimes.

Both leads are experiencing unparalleled success, Lopez recently returned back to American Idol as a judge. Davis currently stars in the hit ABC prime-time drama, How To Get Away with Murder, which also brought her a Screen Actors Guild award in January.

The premiered out-of-competition at Sundance in late January. There are no details, at this point, regarding when the distributor will release the film in theaters.
