The fascinating behind-the-scenes look at Former Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y.) implosive run for mayor of New York is deliciously documented in this very human story, which doubles as an emotional family trainwreck in the documentary, Weiner.

On the surface, this story chronicling Weiner’s run for mayor of New York should have been a redemptive tale. Resigning in disgrace after a sexting scandal, the former congressman was badly in need of a second act. Filmmakers Josh Kriegman and Elyse Steinberg convince Weiner to give them all-access to his comeback and initially, the story of this family man with an amazing wife and Hillary Clinton political operative Huma Abedin seems to be picking up momentum.

Gifted with innate political skills and a passion for fighting for the under-served, Weiner gains a small, yet growing following through the city. As his base continues to broaden, he is constantly pursued by the media who feels that Weiner has been less than forthcoming about his sexting scandal. Their persistence pushes his issues in this election to the background, sensationalizing the void they felt is missing from explanation with their own narrative.

Just as he appears to be turning the corner with his supporters, Weiner is hit with more allegation that not just strain his campaign but his home-life with his wife. The real victim here is Huma, who incredulously remains loyal to her man despite his repeated episodes of bad judgment and mistakes. Her pain and embarrassment represent every political wife from Jackie Kennedy to Hillary Clinton, women who have endured the storm of challenging political relationships.

The end result is a gripping tale that is a first-hand look at a political meltdown from the inside. Kriegman and Steinberg may ultimately make more documentaries in the future, but you can rest assure that none will as transparent, revealing and painful as Weiner.
