Film critic Tim Gordon praises Brendan Fraser for an Oscar-worthy performance in his review of “The Whale.”
Based on screenwriter Samuel D. Hunter’s 2012 play of the same name, The Whale focuses on an extremely obese online college professor Charlie, played by Brendan Fraser, who is desperately attempting to reconnect with his estranged daughter, Ellie, who is played by Sadie Sink. She is extremely resentful of her father for leaving her and her mother when she was very young.
Despite her anger toward him, Charlie can only see the potential for good in his estranged daughter. As Gordon notes, it is ironic that an actor who made his mark in a series of big-budget blockbusters is receiving the best notices of his career in this small, intimate story.
