Reel Reviews | The Substance

by Tim Gordon

A fading celebrity decides to use a black-market drug, a cell-replicating substance that temporarily creates a younger, better version of herself.

The Substance is a body horror film co-produced, written, and directed by Coralie Fargeat. The film stars Demi Moore, Margaret Qualley, and Dennis Quaid.

Moore said she was nervous about filming full nudity at age 61 and felt vulnerable but she credited co-star Qualley, who played a younger version of her and also performed naked, with making her feel comfortable on set. Moore said she found “someone who was a great partner who I felt very safe with. We obviously were quite close — naked — and we also got a lot of levity in those moments at how absurd those certain situations were.”
