Reasonable Doubt Season 4 Episode 1 Recap: 5 Devastating Turns for Jax

Reasonable Doubt Season 4 Episode 1 Recap picks up three weeks after Monica (Brandee Evans) walked into Jax Stewartโ€™s (Emayatzy Corinealdi) new office and opened fire. Instead of celebrating the launch of the Stewart Firm, Jax is in intensive care fighting for her life.

Over the strains of Jay-Zโ€™s โ€œSong Cryโ€, Lewis sleeps beside his wife while her team worries about her recovery and her mother cares for the children. The doctor gives Lewis two possibilities: Jax wakes up and resumes her life, or she remains comatose long enough that he must decide whether to keep her alive through machines.

Meanwhile, the Stewart Firm must survive without its founder just as Jaxโ€™s former colleagues begin circling her clients.

Reasonable Doubt Season 4 Episode 1 Recap: Corey Cash Steps In

The Reasonable Doubt Season 4 Episode 1 Recap shifts to Corey Cash (Morris Chestnut), who leaves his pre-wedding celebration and heads to Los Angeles to help Krystal Walters (Angela Grovey) and Daniel Kim (Tim Jo) protect Jaxโ€™s fledgling firm.

Their biggest challenge is music superstar Eric Cropper (Durrell โ€œTankโ€ Babbs), a longtime Jax client whom her former firm is trying to poach. Cropper dismisses their pitch, pointing out that eight lawyers still can’t match the skills and hustle of one Black woman.

Corey visits Jax and promises to fight for everything she built, but his relationship with Cropper quickly deteriorates. Cropper wants to buy out his wife Brookeโ€™s (Taylor Polidore Williams) shares and insists Jax understands how to operate in the gray. Corey refuses to play by those rules, and the confrontation nearly becomes physical.

Back at the firm, Corey drops Cropper as a client, declaring, โ€œAll money ainโ€™t good money.โ€ Cropper then fires Brooke as COO during a heated argument, prompting her to warn that he will feel her wrath in ways he cannot imagine. Tyger (DeVaughn Nixon) later arrives to discuss the Layla project and becomes uneasy when Cropper announces plans to become more involved.

Monica Finds an Ally

Lewis meets with Regina Harris (Meagan Good) hoping to understand why Monica shot Jax. Regina explains that Monica believes Jax made the Ozzie Edwards case personal but warns Lewis that understanding her reasoning won’t bring him peace. His focus needs to be justice.

Monica gains an unexpected ally when Ozzieโ€™s mother, Rosie Edwards (April Parker Jones), visits her in jail. Still blaming Jax, Rosie offers to secure one of Californiaโ€™s best attorneys for Monica.

The move immediately complicates the case. Monicaโ€™s new lawyer enters a not-guilty plea, gets her removed from general population and requests a psychiatric evaluation. The woman accused of nearly killing Jax is now preparing an aggressive defense.

Lewis Reaches His Breaking Point

The emotional heart of โ€œDead or Aliveโ€ belongs to Lewis, who has spent three weeks trying to hold his family together while refusing to fully confront the possibility that Jax may never come home.

When Shanelle Tucker (Shannon Kane) finds him breaking down at home, Lewis admits that he isn’t only angry with Monica. He is angry with Jax, too. He warned his wife that her clients could put her in danger, and now he is living with the consequences.

Shanelle reminds him that marriage can contain love, fear and anger simultaneously, but Lewis must take care of himself for Jax and their children.

Meanwhile, Bill Sterling (Joseph Sikora) becomes increasingly uncomfortable with Jaxโ€™s former firm targeting her clients. After Sally Braswell (Nefetari Spencer) reminds him that people make time for what they value, Bill approaches Corey, exposes his firm’s strategy and offers to work for Jax without pay. Corey turns him down, but Bill has clearly chosen his side.

Reasonable Doubt Season 4 Episode 1 Ending: Jax Wakes Up

The final act of the Reasonable Doubt Season 4 Episode 1 Recap finds Lewis remembering Jaxโ€™s fears about starting her own practice. She once worried that if the firm struggled during its first six months, she might need his help. Now those concerns feel insignificant compared with whether she will ever come home.

The next morning, Lewis receives an urgent call from the hospital. He races there and sees medical personnel working feverishly in Jaxโ€™s room as memories of their relationship flood his mind.

Then he learns Jax has been moved. Lewis enters another room and finds his wife awake. After three weeks of uncertainty, Jax looks at him and quietly says, โ€œLewis.โ€

He looks at the woman he feared he had lost and responds, โ€œJax.โ€

โ€œDead or Aliveโ€ begins with Jax Stewart suspended between life and death and ends with her getting another chance. But Monica is preparing her defense, Jaxโ€™s former firm is coming after what she built, and Lewis has finally admitted the anger buried beneath his fear.

Jax survived the shooting. Now she has to deal with everything that happened while she was gone.
