Reacher Season 4 Episode 1 Recap Begins Underground
It is 2 a.m. in Philadelphia, and Jack Reacher is waiting for the subway after polishing off a cheesesteak.
When the train arrives, he boards a nearly empty car and immediately begins studying the passengers.
There are five people.
One concerns him.
A woman sits at the far end of the car, visibly distressed. Her hands are buried inside a blue bag on her lap as she rocks back and forth and mutters to herself.
Reacher watches her behavior and suspects the worst.
A bomb.
He approaches carefully and talks her into removing her hands from the bag.
There is no explosive.
There is a revolver.
Reacher offers to help, but the woman tells him that nobody can help her now.
Before he can intervene, she shoots herself.
It is a shocking beginning because Reacher’s greatest weapon has always been his ability to read a situation before everyone else.
This time, he sees the danger.
He simply cannot stop it.
That failure becomes the emotional spark for everything that follows.
One Passenger Is Missing
Reacher is taken to the police station, where Detectives John Docherty and Tamara Green question him about the woman’s death.
Her name is Anna.
Reacher explains what happened and reminds the detectives that the other passengers can corroborate his account.
There is only one problem.
Police have three witnesses.
Reacher counted four.
Someone left the scene.
That single discrepancy changes everything.
What looked like a tragic suicide suddenly becomes a puzzle, and puzzles have a way of getting Reacher’s attention.
He also notices something else.
The investigation is moving strangely.
If Anna’s death were simply a local matter, Reacher reasons, there would be little reason for everyone to behave as though they are waiting for someone else to arrive.
Washington is coming.

Even while sharing cheesesteaks with the detectives, Reacher cannot stop analyzing them. He quickly recognizes that Green is stuck working the graveyard shift and needles her about it.

When he sees Jacob leaving the station, Reacher decides his conversation with the mysterious agents is over.
He’s not under arrest.
So he leaves.
Everybody Wants the Thumb Drive
Reacher barely makes it outside before two men approach him.
They have a question.
Did Anna give him a thumb drive?
When they attempt to search him, Reacher provides his answer physically.
One man ends up head-first in a newspaper box.
The other ends up unconscious.
Message received.
Reacher crosses the street and finds Jacob sitting in a diner. He introduces himself as the man who was with Anna when she died.
Then Reacher does something interesting.
He buys a flash drive from an artist sitting nearby.
It’s empty.
But nobody else needs to know that.
Reacher tells Jacob that he intends to discover what happened to Anna.
Jacob asks the obvious question.
Why?
Reacher’s answer reveals the motivation driving him through the episode.
He couldn’t help Anna when she needed him.
Now he can help find out why she believed death was her only option.
Reacher Goes Fishing
The fake flash drive becomes bait.
Reacher returns to the men who attacked him, flashes the drive, and demands to meet their boss.
The bluff works.
They take him to two women.
One introduces herself as Lila.
The other remains silent.
Lila explains that she and Anna were investigating Congressman John Samson and attempting to uncover damaging information about him.
But Lila’s interest isn’t merely political.
She believes Samson is her biological father.
And she has leukemia.
If her condition worsens, establishing that biological relationship could become a matter of survival because she may need a bone marrow donor.
Then Reacher reveals his trick.
The flash drive is fake.
He doesn’t have Anna’s information.
But he agrees to help Lila find answers.

Green Doesn’t Like What the Feds Are Doing
While Reacher pursues Anna’s connection to Lila, Detective Green returns to the station and discovers Snap, Crackle and Pop searching through her desk.
She immediately confronts them.
Docherty stops her.
Their captain has already turned the investigation over to the federal government.
Whatever Anna Merrick stumbled into is no longer a Philadelphia police matter.
At least officially.
Green doesn’t appear particularly happy about that arrangement.
And Reacher has already demonstrated that official jurisdiction means very little to him.
The Library Becomes a Battleground
Reacher and Jacob head to the library to investigate Samson’s military history.
Naturally, research doesn’t remain peaceful for long.
While searching records in the basement, Reacher encounters another armed man.
He wants the thumb drive.
Reacher has apparently grown tired of explaining that he doesn’t have it.
So when the man demands it, Reacher simply says:
No.
A brutal fight erupts among the library stacks.
Reacher knocks away the man’s weapon before using the shelving itself against him, crushing his attacker between the units.
He rejoins Jacob upstairs and immediately recognizes what comes next.
Backup.
The two split up and agree to meet at the train station at six.
Reacher intends to keep moving.
Someone else has different plans.
Reacher Gets Tranquilized
Outside, a transport van races around the corner.
Four suited men emerge.
This isn’t another pair of street-level muscle.
They’re prepared.
One carries a tranquilizer gun.
Their leader orders Reacher into the van.
Reacher refuses.
Of course he does.
Then a dart hits him in the leg.
Even drugged, Reacher fights back.
The tranquilizer slows him, but it doesn’t immediately stop him.
A second dart hits his neck.
That does the trick.
Jack Reacher, a man who generally ends confrontations on his own terms, collapses.
And for the first time this season, somebody else gets to decide where he goes next.

Why does Reacher investigate Anna’s death?

When he discovers that a passenger disappeared from the scene and multiple groups are searching for something Anna may have possessed, Reacher realizes her death may have been connected to something much larger.
What is everyone looking for?
Multiple people believe Anna gave Reacher a thumb drive before she died. The mysterious federal agents ask whether she handed him anything, while two men later confront him specifically about the drive. Reacher doesn’t have it, but he cleverly uses a fake drive to force his way deeper into the mystery.
Who is Lila?
Lila tells Reacher that she and Anna were attempting to uncover damaging information about Congressman John Samson. She also claims Samson is her biological father. Because Lila has leukemia and may eventually need a bone marrow donor, proving the relationship could become a matter of life and death.
Why is Reacher kidnapped?
The episode does not yet reveal who orders Reacher’s abduction or exactly what his captors want. What is clear is that the people behind it are organized enough to arrive with a transport van, multiple operatives, and tranquilizer weapons specifically capable of subduing him.

A missing subway passenger, mysterious federal agents, a nonexistent thumb drive, Congressman Samson, Lila’s extraordinary claim, and increasingly violent attempts to silence Reacher all point toward something much larger.
More importantly, the episode understands what makes Reacher compelling.
He doesn’t investigate because someone hired him.
He doesn’t investigate because he has authority.
He investigates because something doesn’t add up.
And once Jack Reacher recognizes that the math is wrong, walking away is rarely an option.
By the end of “City of Brotherly Love,” Reacher has gone from anonymous passenger to unwilling captive in the span of a few hours.
Someone clearly wants him out of the way.
If the first three seasons have taught us anything, tranquilizing Jack Reacher may solve that problem for a few minutes.
After that?
Probably not.
