The shifting landscape of film releases is constantly changing. Two recent movies are now on the move with both the award-winning drama, Fruitvale Station and comedy, Think Like A Man Too the latest candidates.
The Weinstein Company (TWC) announced that they have moved the release date for Ryan Coogler’s directorial debut, Fruitvale Station up by 2 weeks, from its previous move on July 26 to July 12. The film was originally scheduled for release on October 18.
The initial release date placed the acclaimed story firmly on Oscar’s radar. TWC could be thinking about the success that Beasts of the Southern Wild enjoyed with a release date around the same period. Instead of an possible awards spotlight, the film now moves to the highly populated and competitive June 12th weekend which already features Grown Ups 2, Pacific Rim and several other independent films.
Also shifting on the calendar is the sequel to Think Like A Man Too. Sony/Screen Gems has announced that the film is moving from May 30, 2014 to June 20, 2014. As the landscape of studios looking to position their tentpole films for maximum exposure, its possible that this may not be the end for these or other upcoming releases.
