From June 3–5, 2027, LightReel will once again transform Washington, DC’s Union Market District into a gathering place for filmmakers, audiences, artists and industry professionals.

LightReel Film Festival 2027 will build on that experience, bringing filmmakers and audiences together throughout the Union Market District for three days of cinema, conversation and community.

A CALL FOR NEW AND RETURNING FILMMAKERS

At the center of LightReel has always been the filmmakers.

As submissions open for LightReel 8, the festival is looking forward to showcasing work from both new filmmakers discovering LightReel for the first time and returning filmmakers continuing their relationship with the festival.

LightReel seeks films with something to say. Stories that introduce audiences to different communities, challenge familiar perspectives, uncover overlooked experiences and demonstrate the extraordinary range of independent filmmaking.

Whether coming from an emerging filmmaker presenting an early work or an established filmmaker returning with a new project, every submission represents another opportunity to expand the conversation.

LightReel Film Festival 2027 welcomes submissions from new voices discovering the festival for the first time as well as returning filmmakers bringing their latest work back to Washington.

STORIES FROM ACROSS CULTURES AND COMMUNITIES

LightReel’s identity as a multicultural film festival is rooted in the belief that great storytelling is not confined by geography, background or tradition.

Each year, the festival brings together films and filmmakers representing different cultures, countries and lived experiences, creating a program where those perspectives can exist alongside one another.

For LightReel 8, the festival will once again seek compelling narrative and documentary work that reflects the breadth of today’s filmmaking community while giving Washington audiences an opportunity to discover stories they might not encounter anywhere else.

That commitment will remain at the heart of LightReel Film Festival 2027, as the festival searches for stories reflecting the breadth of cultures, communities and experiences shaping independent cinema.

MORE THAN A FILM SCREENING

Being selected for LightReel is about more than seeing a film projected on a screen.

The festival is designed to create opportunities for filmmakers and audiences to engage with one another through post-screening conversations, panels, industry discussions, networking opportunities and special events throughout the weekend.

That exchange is central to the LightReel experience.

Films begin conversations. LightReel creates the space for those conversations to continue beyond the theater.
