Lanterns Season 1 Episode 6 Recap: John Stewart Unearths Hal Jordan’s Final Secret
Lanterns Season 1 Episode 6 Recap returns to 2026 with John Stewart having done what Hal Jordan never quite managed to do: move on. Ten years after Rushville, John has built a new life as an architect alongside his brother Marcus, pitching massive panic rooms and football-field-sized bunkers for Midway City. The Green Lantern Corps, the Manhunter and the ring appear to belong to another life until his mother, Bernadette, calls with news that immediately drags his past into the present.
Hal Jordan wants to apologize.
Bernadette has remained in contact with Hal since his release from prison and encourages her son to hear him out. John reluctantly returns to Rushville, but reconciliation isn’t waiting for him. Hal insists that he spent ten years behind bars taking the fall for both of them, accuses John of being a murderer and claims that the real reason he rejected the Green Lantern ring was fear. John answers by punching him in the face and breaking his nose. Before he leaves, Hal gives him one final warning: nobody can know John was there.
John barely makes it home before Sheriff Kerry Kane calls. Hal Jordan has been shot in the head, and suddenly the broken nose John gave him makes Stewart more than an estranged former friend. It makes him one of the last people known to have assaulted Hal before his murder.

Lanterns Episode 106 Brings John Stewart Back to Rushville
John immediately returns to Rushville, where Kerry meets him at the football field and fills in some of the missing pieces. Hal came back hoping to make amends with the people he hurt, although nobody seemed interested in accepting his apologies. He had also been writing to Kerry since her separation from her husband, suggesting that his return may have been about something more personal than simply revisiting the scene of his greatest failure.
Kerry offers John somewhere to stay, but he tells her he’ll get a room at the motel. That’s when he discovers another reminder of what happened a decade earlier: the motel was never rebuilt. Instead, Kerry sends him to the house Hal had been renting and advises him to enter through the back door. It’s excellent advice. John arrives to discover a rifle rigged to fire at anyone entering through the front, while Earl is also inside the house. Whatever Hal was involved in before his death, somebody apparently expected trouble to follow him home.
The following day, Kerry takes John to Hal’s autopsy, where the medical examiner explains that it could take months to determine whether the person who broke Hal’s nose left usable DNA. That leaves John with another secret to protect, but his attention shifts when he learns that Hal has no family and will be cremated. Despite everything between them, John refuses to let that happen. Hal Jordan deserves a burial.
Kerry agrees to contact a funeral director, and the two make plans for dinner. She offers to make her famous meatloaf before remembering John doesn’t eat meat. John corrects her. He does now. It’s a small exchange, but it quietly establishes how much life has happened during the decade these people have spent apart.
Rushville Hasn’t Forgotten Green Lantern
If John has changed, so has Rushville. Lanterns Season 1 Episode 6 Recap spends much of “Bad Optics” showing what remains after the superheroes leave and everyone else has to live with the consequences. At a liquor store, John finds Guy Gardner’s face plastered across a cardboard display advertising Electro Punch, complete with Green Lantern branding. The symbol that once represented something extraordinary has become marketing.
John soon discovers another piece of Green Lantern history in the town square, where a signal light still stands. He switches it on, only for four men in a truck to arrive and demand that he shut it off. Billy recognizes John and explains that Green Lantern is no longer welcome in Rushville. When the men threaten to turn John off themselves, they quickly discover that a decade away from the Corps hasn’t made Stewart any less capable of handling himself. John dispatches them and leaves the light burning.
The moment says plenty about John’s complicated relationship with the identity he rejected. He didn’t take Hal’s ring. He didn’t join the Corps. He built a life entirely outside of Green Lantern. Yet when Rushville tries to erase the symbol, John refuses to let them do it.
Later, John sits down for dinner with Kerry and Noah, catching up on the lives that continued after he left town. The reunion doesn’t last. Kerry receives a call, and John is arrested for the town-square assault. Sitting in jail, he calls Marcus and asks his brother to send bail money in the morning.
Then Guy Gardner walks in.
Everybody Has Something to Hide
Guy’s arrival finally gives “Bad Optics” its title. John tells him that Hal has been murdered and asks for his help, but Guy immediately wants distance from the situation. Getting involved with the murder of another Green Lantern would be “bad optics.”
John’s request, however, isn’t really about solving the murder. He wants Hal buried in his Green Lantern uniform with his ring. Guy tells him the ring has been decommissioned and returned to Oa, but John refuses to accept the answer. He reminds Guy that if John had accepted the ring a decade earlier, Guy might not have anything now. When John accuses him of being afraid, Guy finally agrees to think about it.
The exchange reveals how differently John and Guy view Hal’s death. Guy sees the institutional problem surrounding a disgraced Green Lantern. John sees the man underneath the uniform. For all the resentment he still carries toward Hal, he refuses to let the Corps reduce his former mentor to an embarrassment better forgotten.
John has problems of his own. After his release, the waitress from the diner appears at Hal’s house demanding exactly $314,536.27 in reparations for the damage he caused. If John doesn’t pay, she’ll tell Kerry that he met Hal at the diner shortly before his murder. John didn’t kill Hal, but between the secret meeting, the broken nose and his decision to keep both facts from Kerry, he’s steadily assembling the kind of circumstantial case that could make him look guilty.
Before John can solve that problem, Noah arrives with a suit for the funeral. John apologizes for beating up his father, but Noah doesn’t seem particularly bothered.
“Don’t worry. He probably deserved it.”
Hal Jordan Gets His Final Farewell
Guy ultimately keeps his promise, or at least enough of it to give Hal the burial John wanted. At the funeral, Hal is dressed in his Green Lantern uniform with the ring on his finger. Guy wastes little time making his exit, once again citing “bad optics,” leaving John, Kerry and Carol Ferris to say goodbye.
Carol asks John to deliver the eulogy, which produces one of the episode’s saddest and funniest ironies. Hal wrote the speech himself, apparently imagining a grand farewell attended by world dignitaries. Instead, John reads those words at a nearly empty graveside. The man who once carried one of the most powerful weapons in the universe leaves the world with almost nobody there to mourn him.
The funeral also reveals something John hasn’t been willing to say. Whatever Hal did to him, whatever happened in Rushville and whatever anger remained after their disastrous final meeting, John still believes the man deserves dignity in death. His insistence on the uniform, the ring and a proper burial isn’t about the Green Lantern Corps. It’s about Hal.
Kerry invites him to breakfast afterward, and John accepts. It feels briefly as though the funeral might finally allow him to put their history to rest.
John has other plans.
Lanterns Season 1 Episode 6 Ending Explained
That night, Lanterns Season 1 Episode 6 Recap takes its wonderfully macabre final turn when John returns to the cemetery and digs Hal Jordan back up. He opens the coffin, removes the ring from Hal’s finger and finally places it on his own.
There is still some charge left.
John uses that remaining power to manifest an avatar of Hal, essentially turning the ring into the most unusual witness interview imaginable. The spectral Jordan looks down into the grave, sees his own dead body and responds with an appropriately stunned curse.
It’s a terrific reversal of everything the season has built around John and the ring. His parents prepared him for it. The Guardians selected him for it. Hal trained him to inherit it. John rejected all of them because he refused to become Green Lantern on someone else’s terms.
Ten years later, John finally puts on Hal’s ring, but not because he wants the mantle. He wants the truth.
“Bad Optics” therefore brings Lanterns full circle without simply resetting the story. In 2016, Hal was the experienced Green Lantern dragging John into an investigation he didn’t fully understand. In 2026, John is the investigator, Hal is the mystery and the ring has become the tool that may allow him to solve his former mentor’s murder.
John spent a decade trying to leave Hal Jordan behind. Hal returned looking for forgiveness, died before either man could resolve what remained between them and left John with one final mystery.
Now John has literally dug up the past.
And the first thing he does after finally accepting Hal Jordan’s ring is use it to bring Hal Jordan back.
