Lanterns Season 1 Episode 4 Preview: Hal and Sinestro Reunite

“The Weenie” brings the season back to a conversation that has been waiting since “Trust Fall.”

Hal Jordan and Sinestro have history.

Sinestro was once Hal’s mentor, but whatever remains between them now appears considerably more dangerous. The Episode 4 preview suggests Sinestro understands Hal’s insecurities surrounding John and intends to use them. Preview footage reportedly has Sinestro pushing Hal toward eliminating John altogether.

For Hal, that proposition arrives at precisely the wrong moment.

John is no longer simply an inexperienced recruit following him around. “OutKast” revealed more about how John was selected and prepared for the Green Lantern role. Now the possibility that he could eventually replace Hal gives Sinestro something powerful to manipulate.

John Stewart Is No Longer Just the Rookie

“OutKast” belonged largely to John.

The episode explored his family history and the circumstances that ultimately placed him on the path toward becoming a Green Lantern. “The Weenie” can now examine what John’s emergence means for the man already wearing the ring.

The Lanterns Season 1 Episode 4 Preview puts Hal in an uncomfortable position. He has spent years carrying the reputation and responsibilities associated with being Earth’s Green Lantern. John represents the future, whether Hal is prepared to acknowledge it or not.

Sinestro appears ready to turn that anxiety into a weapon.

The question isn’t simply whether Hal trusts John.

It’s whether Hal can accept what John represents.

What Does Sinestro Really Want?

Sinestro’s return immediately expands the mystery beyond Rushville.

The investigation into the murder in America’s heartland remains the spine of Lanterns, but the series has gradually revealed that something much larger surrounds John and Hal.

Sinestro could provide answers.

He could also create considerably more problems.

If he genuinely wants Hal to turn against John, understanding his motivation becomes one of the episode’s biggest questions. Is Sinestro trying to protect Hal? Manipulate him? Divide Earth’s Lanterns? Or is his warning connected to something neither John nor Hal fully understands yet?

“The Weenie” arrives at the midpoint of the eight-episode season, making this an ideal moment for the pieces scattered across the first three chapters to begin connecting.

The Mystery Returns to Rushville

After Episode 3 stepped away from the present-day investigation to explore John’s past, “The Weenie” appears ready to bring the story back toward Rushville.

That means the murder investigation, the strange circumstances surrounding the town, and Hal’s increasingly questionable behavior can begin moving toward the same destination.

The Lanterns Season 1 Episode 4 Preview therefore arrives at an important crossroads.

John has learned more about why he was chosen.

Hal is confronting someone who understands his past.

And the audience already knows something neither man can escape: Hal Jordan’s story is moving toward the death revealed at the beginning of the series.

The road connecting those points is becoming increasingly important.

What to Watch in “The Weenie”

The relationship between Hal and Sinestro is the biggest thread to watch in Episode 4.

Pay particular attention to how Sinestro talks about John, how Hal responds to the possibility of being replaced, and whether the former mentor reveals anything about the larger forces surrounding the season’s mystery.

The Lanterns Season 1 Episode 4 Preview also raises an important question about Hal himself. The series has deliberately presented him as a complicated mentor whose actions don’t always align with what John expects from the legendary Green Lantern.

Sinestro may know why.

If “OutKast” showed us how John Stewart became a Lantern, “The Weenie” could begin showing us how Hal Jordan started losing his way.

And somewhere between those two stories may be the answer to what really happened to Hal.

“The Weenie” premieres Sunday, September 6, 2026, on HBO and HBO Max.
