The story of the epic battles between Sugar Ray Leonard and Roberto Duran is spotlighted in the upcoming boxing film, Hands of Stone.
The film follows the life of Roberto Durán, who made his professional boxing debut in 1968 as a 16-year-old and retired in 2002 at age 50. Duran defeated Leonard in June 1980 to win the WBC welterweight title, but Leonard returned the favor in their rematch when Duran shocked the boxing world by returning to his corner, saying ‘no más’ (no more).
Hands of Stone also includes elements of both the “Brawl in Montreal,” the first fight between Durán and Leonard, and the follow-up “no mas” fight, which took place in New Orleans. In the eighth round of that fight, Duran inexplicably quit, saying in Spanish “no mas.” They fought one more time, and Leonard won again.
Oscar winner Robert De Niro plays Duran’s Hall of Fame trainer, Ray Arcel, and Reg E. Cathey plays Don King. Also starring in the film are Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Ellen Barkin, Ruben Blades and Ana de Armas also star in the film. Jonathan Jakubowicz wrote the script and will direct the film.
Hands of Stone will be released on August 26.
