Less than a week after his latest movie went number one at the boxoffice, the man who REFUSES to go away, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is back again. Both he and his Pain & Gain co-star love Miami so much, they have decided to team up for a new HBO dramedy set on South Beach.
This time, the pair will ditch their dunce caps and play a set of retired athletes living in Miami with The Rock in the lead. The untitled series reunites Entourage producer Stephen Levison with that show’s inspiration, Wahlberg for this latest venture. Peter Berg (Battleship) is attached to film the pilot, which HBO hopes to shoot this fall.
Many forget that before he became a wrestling sensation, Johnson won a national championship playing for the storied Miami Hurricane college football program. He later shot into the celebrity stratosphere during time with the World Wrestling Federation on the way to becoming one of the sport’s best and most renowned personalities.
The pilot marks Johnson’s latest small-screen effort. In June, he’ll host TNT’s reality competition series The Hero, in which 10 people live in a house and participate in various missions that test their brains, brawn and even their morality. The HBO vehicle, should it go to series, would mark his first small-screen series regular role following features The Mummy Returns, The Scorpion King, G.I. Joe: Retaliation and countless others.
