A Different World Season 1 Episode 7 Recap: Everybody Has Something to Prove

Hillman’s budget problems have created an unexpected opportunity. Instead of staging separate talent and fashion shows along with the Ms. Gilbert Hall reveal, the university has combined everything into one supersized event. That puts nearly everyone we’ve been following on the same stage with something different to prove. Hazel wants the crown, Rashida wants the prize money, Kojo wants his fashion ambitions taken seriously and Deborah wants to prove that artistic talent didn’t stop with the other Wayne children.

That’s the engine driving A Different World Season 1 Episode 7. “Sometimes You Get The Culture…Sometimes The Culture Gets You” isn’t simply about performing in front of Hillman. Nearly everyone is already performing some version of themselves. Kojo hasn’t told his parents he’s studying fashion. Amir hasn’t told Hazel what happened with Jalen. Shaquille wants Deborah back without mentioning Candance, while Deborah is still trying to convince Hillman that she belongs there on her own terms.

Hazel’s problems in A Different World Season 1 Episode 7 begin when she admits to Deborah that she’s been experiencing pain after having sex with Jalen. Deborah immediately tells her to get tested, advice that becomes more urgent when Hillman announces that several students have tested positive for chlamydia. Hazel eventually learns she only has a yeast infection, but the scare creates a much larger conversation about sexual responsibility across campus.

Deborah gets bad news of a different kind when Kimberly Reese Boyer and Brooklyn Boyer reject her application for an independent arts major. Hillman isn’t interested in receiving the same package Deborah has submitted elsewhere. If she wants the university to build an academic path around her artistic ambitions, she needs to show them something created specifically for Hillman. Deborah decides the talent showcase can become her appeal.

Shaquille chooses this moment to apologize for his reaction to Ellington and asks Deborah if they can start over. She’s tired of starting over. Their relationship has become a cycle of attraction, conflict and reconciliation, and Deborah isn’t convinced another reset will produce a different ending. She also doesn’t know Shaquille slept with Candance.

Kojo is carrying one of the biggest secrets in A Different World Season 1 Episode 7 when his parents arrive believing he’s an engineering student instead of a fashion merchandising major. Their concerns go beyond academics, especially amid reports of ICE targeting Ghanaians, but Kojo understands that telling them the truth means defending fashion as more than a hobby. Complicating matters, Nneka turns down his invitation to walk in his show because she belongs to Haus Authority, Hillman’s largest fashion organization, and Kojo isn’t a member.

At home, his parents don’t understand his ambitions. On campus, the organization he wants to join hasn’t accepted him. The showcase becomes his opportunity to prove himself to both.

Hillman Has a Lot of Truth Coming

Deborah’s determination to prove herself creates tension with Hazel and Rashida when she attempts to change their routine at the last minute. Her friends aren’t interested in jeopardizing their own chances because Deborah suddenly needs the performance to rescue her academic plans, and the trio essentially breaks up like Destiny’s Child. Hazel later attempts to reunite “Beyoncé” and “Kelly,” but the reunion tour will have to wait.

While waiting to be tested, Shaquille and Amir exchange considerably bigger confessions. Shaquille admits that he slept with Candance after breaking up with Deborah. Amir finally reveals why he’s been avoiding Hazel: he slept with Jalen. Both men test negative, but their results are almost secondary to the romantic fallout waiting outside the clinic.

Kojo finally stops hiding when he takes his parents to The Pit and his father treats Rashida rudely. He tells them the truth about his major and invites them to the showcase. Instead of continuing to explain why fashion matters to him, he’s going to show them.

Candance gives Deborah similar advice. She encourages her to make the revised presentation personal because authenticity will connect with the committee. She also tells Deborah that Shaquille is in her past for a reason and suggests she move forward with Ellington. The irony is delicious considering Deborah still doesn’t know Candance slept with him.

Eventually, A Different World Season 1 Episode 7 brings everyone together for Hillman’s big night, where those private anxieties finally have to survive under the lights.

Hazel is crowned Ms. Gilbert Hall, while Rashida’s performance of “Free Yourself” gets off to a shaky start when her nerves take over. Kojo recognizes what’s happening and helps her settle into the song until she finds her voice and commands the stage. Whatever problems remain between them, their connection clearly hasn’t disappeared.

Kojo’s fashion show is equally successful, but when he looks toward the balcony, his parents’ seats are empty. His mother eventually finds him backstage and reveals that she stayed. She’s impressed, proud and promises to work on his father, who isn’t ready to offer the same acceptance. Then she gives Kojo one more endorsement.

She likes Rashida.

Deborah delivers one of the biggest swings in A Different World Season 1 Episode 7 with an aerial silk routine accompanied by a video of her singing. It’s personal, ambitious and unmistakably hers. The committee that rejected her application sees enough to reverse its decision.

Deborah gets her independent arts major.

The victory matters because Deborah has spent much of freshman year reacting to other people’s definitions of her: Dwayne and Whitley’s daughter, the student who didn’t make it at Tisch, the girl struggling academically, Shaquille’s girlfriend. The showcase allows her to present something that belongs entirely to her.

Rashida ultimately wins Hillman’s Got Talent, and at the afterparty she thanks Kojo for helping her through the performance. Their moment is interrupted when Nneka announces that Kojo has been invited to join Haus Authority. Kojo hugs her enthusiastically while Rashida watches with enough jealousy to confirm that their romantic story isn’t finished.

The Truth Gets Its Turn

Amir has a more difficult conversation waiting. He finally tells Hazel that he slept with Jalen. She refuses to believe him, calls him a liar and walks away. The revelation doesn’t simply threaten her relationship with Jalen. It also damages her friendship with Amir, who knew something that directly affected her and waited to tell her.

Deborah has her own misunderstanding. She discovers flowers Shaquille left for her but assumes they’re from Ellington. At the afterparty, she thanks Ellington and kisses him while Shaquille watches from across the room. He entered the episode hoping for another chance and leaves watching Deborah move toward someone else while carrying a secret of his own about Candance.

That’s what gives A Different World Season 1 Episode 7 its larger idea. The showcase isn’t simply a place to gather the characters. It’s an episode about what happens when the versions of ourselves we present to other people collide with the truth.

Kojo stops pretending to be the son his parents expected and earns his mother’s respect. Rashida pushes through her fear and wins. Deborah stops trying to fit somebody else’s definition of an artist and convinces Hillman to create room for her. Amir finally tells Hazel the truth, even though it may cost him their friendship. The people still withholding information end the night with considerably messier problems.

That’s the bargain A Different World Season 1 Episode 7 keeps making with this freshman class through Hillman. The culture offers community, history and opportunity, but it also keeps challenging the identities and assumptions they carried onto campus.

Sometimes they get the culture.

Sometimes the culture gets them.

Tonight, everybody gets exposed.
