A Different World Season 1 Episode 3 Recap: Homecoming Takes Center Stage
Nothing brings Hillman generations together quite like Homecoming.
A Different World Season 1 Episode 3, “Center de Stage,” turns the celebration into a collision of old relationships, new romances and a university fighting for its financial future. With alumni returning to campus and Friday Fest suddenly without a headliner, Deborah Wayne once again decides she’s the person who can fix everything.
Meanwhile, Dwayne and Whitley’s separation becomes increasingly difficult to keep private, Shaquille confronts the grief surrounding his mother’s death and several members of Hillman’s newest generation discover that Homecoming has a way of revealing exactly where the heart wants to be.

Show Me the Money
Money becomes an immediate theme in A Different World Season 1 Episode 3, even before Hillman’s Homecoming celebration gets underway.
The episode opens with Hillman students receiving their refund checks, and for financially strapped students like Rashida, the money feels like water in the desert.
Not everyone shares her enthusiasm.
Amir and Hazel have their own reactions before attention turns to Deborah, who receives a reminder that her father is Hillman’s interim president and she doesn’t have financial aid coming.
Girl, go to class.
There’s little time to dwell on money because it’s Homecoming Week, and The Pit is buzzing with students and returning alumni.
Then disaster strikes.
The Friday Fest headliner cancels.
An emergency planning meeting is called, and naturally, Deborah has a plan.
Welcome Home, Hillman
Homecoming also brings some very familiar faces back to campus.
Colonel Bradford Taylor and his wife, Jaleesa, arrive at The Pit, reconnecting with Ron and the rest of their Hillman family.
For Shaquille, however, Homecoming is complicated. The celebration arrives as he’s thinking about his late mother, Jaclyn, and he shares some of those feelings with Ron.
When father and son encounter Brad and Jaleesa, the reunion quickly turns toward another subject occupying Hillman’s alumni grapevine:
Dwayne and Whitley.
Jaleesa wants the tea.
And apparently, she’s not alone.
Deborah Has Another Plan
At Gilbert Hall, the emergency Homecoming committee gathers to solve the Friday Fest problem.
Deborah pitches a rather ambitious replacement:
Summer Walker.
She’s also eager for an opportunity to repair her reputation after becoming the center of Hillman’s recent controversies.
Candance offers encouragement in her own special way.
If Deborah gets Summer, terrific.
If she fails, Candance will make certain everybody knows Deborah Wayne killed Homecoming.

Can Dwayne and Whitley Save Their Marriage?
Away from the Homecoming festivities, A Different World Season 1 Episode 3 returns to the unresolved question hanging over the Wayne family.
Away from campus, Dwayne and Whitley continue couples therapy.
Their problems aren’t rooted in a lack of love. They’re struggling with different priorities surrounding their children, communication and how each sees the marriage.
They’ve always balanced one another.
Now they’re questioning whether balance is enough.
Homecoming makes their separation particularly poignant. They’re returning to the place where their relationship began while wondering whether that relationship can survive.
Love Is in the Hillman Air
While Amir helps Hazel study, Hillman basketball star Jalen arrives for a haircut.
Suddenly, studying becomes considerably more difficult.
Hazel is interested.
So is Amir.
Who Jalen finds interesting remains another question entirely.
Elsewhere, Rashida uses some of her refund money to purchase a dress she hopes Kojo will appreciate. She’s worried about what she spent, but Deborah offers a solution worthy of someone who has clearly done this before:
Keep the tag on.
Problem solved.
Maybe.
Hillman Needs Its Alumni
Dwayne addresses returning alumni with a much bigger problem than Homecoming entertainment.
Hillman needs money.
He challenges graduates to dig deep and help save their university. Brad and Jaleesa make a sizable contribution, while Gina and Charmaine (Karen Malina White) debate their own level of support.
The reunion also gives everyone another opportunity to speculate about Dwayne and Whitley’s marriage.
Homecoming has officially become Homecoming with receipts.
Deborah’s determination gives A Different World Season 1 Episode 3 its biggest Homecoming mission: somehow getting Summer Walker to Hillman.
Operation Summer Walker
Deborah’s plan begins with Kayla, Summer Walker’s nail technician.
Soon Kayla is doing nails throughout Gilbert Hall while Deborah searches for an opening. Even after spending $10,000, Kayla insists she can’t get Summer to perform.
But she inadvertently reveals where Summer is staying.
That’s enough.
Deborah and Rashida recruit Hazel as their wheel woman and head out.
When Summer answers the door, they’re stunned.
Posing as Kayla’s assistants, they get inside and finally reveal their mission: Hillman needs her for Friday Fest.
Summer declines.
Too little notice.
Deborah makes one final appeal, but security escorts them out.
It appears the mission has failed.
Except Kayla quietly suggests to Summer that Hillman might actually be a good look.
The door isn’t completely closed.
Generations of Hillman Men
Back at The Pit, Brad, Ron and Dwayne sit with Kojo and Shaquille discussing Hillman’s financial crisis.
It’s a simple scene with considerable weight.
Three men from Hillman’s past are sitting beside two members of its future, discussing how to preserve the institution connecting them.
That generational bridge is what A Different World Season 1 Episode 3 does particularly well during Homecoming.
The alumni haven’t simply returned to reminisce.
Their Hillman needs them.
The returning alumni allow A Different World Season 1 Episode 3 to connect Hillman’s past directly with the problems facing its present.
Relax, Relate, Release
The alumni gossip eventually catches up with Whitley.
She overhears Gina and Charmaine discussing her marriage and quickly shuts them down.
Jaleesa finally gets Whitley to open up, while Brad has a similar conversation with Dwayne. Their friends reveal that marriage hasn’t always been easy for them either.
Then Jaleesa drops a bombshell.
She once had an affair with Walter Oakes.
Honestly?
Not the most shocking revelation in Hillman history.
Still, their honesty gives Dwayne and Whitley something they desperately need: proof that marital struggles don’t automatically mean the marriage is over.
Brad also gives Dwayne some presidential advice. Hillman can’t solve its financial crisis without difficult decisions.
The university has to get lean.
Jaleesa leaves Whitley with some classic advice of her own:
Relax. Relate. Release.
Amir Gives Hazel a Clue
Out on the yard, Hazel and Amir play a game of figuring out who’s straight and who’s gay.
Hazel isn’t particularly good at it.
That gives Amir the opportunity to offer a pretty substantial clue about himself.
He’s not attracted to Hazel.
But Jalen?
The jury remains out.
Shaquille Finally Needs His Father
Ron and Shaquille also find some emotional honesty during Homecoming.
Ron tells his son that Jaclyn was the love of his life and that since losing her, he’s tried to remain strong for Shaquille.
Shaquille doesn’t need his father to pretend everything is okay.
Through all the grief, he simply needed his dad.
For once, neither man runs away from the conversation.
Friday Fest
Against the odds, Deborah pulls it off.
Summer Walker is performing at Friday Fest.
Ellington congratulates Deborah, while Rashida arrives wearing her new dress.
Kojo definitely approves.
The two kiss, and in the excitement, Kojo pulls off the tag.
Rashida’s face says everything.
There goes the return policy.
Dwayne finds Whitley and asks his wife to dance. Their conversation inevitably turns toward Deborah and her spending, but Dwayne makes something clear.
Whatever happens with their marriage or their daughter, they have to operate as a team.
Whitley agrees.
Nearby, Deborah finds Shaquille.
She remembers that Homecoming falls on the two-year anniversary of his mother’s death and lets him know she’s there if he needs her.
They dance.
For a moment, Hillman feels exactly as it should.
Center de Stage
Homecoming places everyone at the center of something.
Dwayne and Whitley can’t hide from questions about their marriage. Ron and Shaquille finally confront their shared grief. Amir begins revealing another part of himself. Rashida and Kojo move closer together.
And Deborah gets exactly what she’s been chasing.
She saves Friday Fest.
She gets Summer Walker.
People are congratulating her.
For once, Deborah Wayne appears to have changed the narrative.
Then her parents find her.
Turns out Deborah spent $14,000 securing Summer’s appearance.
Dwayne and Whitley are not amused.
Deborah wanted to save Homecoming.
Instead, she may have just created another crisis.
Summer came to Hillman.
But for Deborah Wayne?
Winter has arrived.
