The train of projects is slowing down for one of Hollywood’s power players, Ben Affleck. The trailer for his latest film, Live By Night, is online and the prohibition drama looks great.
Set in the 1920s and 1930s, Live By Night follows Joe Coughlin (Affleck), the prodigal son of a Boston police captain. After moving to Ybor City, Tampa, Florida, he becomes a bootlegger and a rum-runner and, later, a notorious gangster.
Set in the roaring ’20s when Prohibition hasn’t stopped the flow of booze in an underground network of gangster-run speakeasies. The opportunity to gain power and money is there for any man with enough ambition and nerve and Coughlin, the son of the Boston Police Superintendent, long ago turned his back on his strict upbringing for the spoils of being an outlaw. But even among criminals, there are rules and Joe breaks a big one: crossing a powerful mob boss by stealing his money and his moll. The fiery affair ends in tragedy, setting Joe on a path of revenge, ambition, romance and betrayal that propels him out of Boston and up the ladder of Tampa’s steamy rum-running underworld.
Warner Bros initially acquired the rights to Dennis Lehane’s book in 2012 intending for Leonardo DiCaprio to headline the film. Affleck took over the writing, directing and starring duties later in that year, with DiCaprio co-producing the drama.
Live By Night stars Affleck, Elle Fanning, Brendan Gleeson, Chris Messina, Sienna Miller, Zoe Saldana and Chris Cooper. The film will be released on January 13, 2017.
