Pine Exposed and the Net Tightens
Jonathan Pine is exposed and on the run. Desperate and cornered, he meets directly with his enemy while still trying to dismantle the operation from within in Episode 5 of The Night Manager.
Roper Learns the Truth
The episode opens with Richard Roper on the phone with Mayra Cavendish. He reveals that Jonathan Pine, known to her as Alex Goodwin, is alive in Colombia and “knows everything.” Roper orders Mayra to neutralize Pine’s support network while he handles Pine personally. Furious and visibly rattled, Roper is soon joined at home by Teddy.
At a crowded train station, Basil urgently calls Sally, warning her to flee Colombia. He then contacts Angela to cancel their meeting, hinting that he is being followed. Before he can escape, Basil plants a laptop on a shop shelf and is arrested. Angela arrives moments later to retrieve the device.
Cracks in the Operation
Roper explains to Teddy that Pine is a British intelligence operative skilled at extracting information and manipulating trust. Teddy insists he revealed nothing and argues that with the prosecutor dead and the shipment cleared, their operation is secure. Roper disagrees, enraged that what was supposed to be a covert deal is now dangerously exposed.
Meanwhile, Pine drives Roxana and Tavo, the young witness, to Roxana’s father’s home. Martin forwards Pine recordings, including Roper’s conversation with Teddy that exposes Pine’s identity and role. After Tavo warns Pine that Roxana cannot be trusted, Pine and Roxana clash over lies and broken promises. Pine admits he can no longer keep his word. Roxana coldly tells him never to ask her for anything again.
Mayra Turns on Basil
Mayra confronts Basil with proof that Goodwin is alive in Medellín. She reveals that she discovered surveillance equipment in her home and that Basil stole Holywell’s phone. Pressing him for answers about Pine’s plans, she is met with denial. Basil insists he believed Goodwin was dead and knows nothing. Mayra orders one of her men to “jog his memory.”
A Dangerous Proposition
At Roper’s house, tensions rise as Frisky, a fixer brought in specifically to deal with Pine, arrives. Teddy’s phone rings. Pine wants Roper to meet him alone at a hilltop restaurant.
The meeting is tense but controlled. Pine lays out what he knows about Roper’s arms operation and demands that Roper turn himself in. If not, Pine warns, he will ensure the Syrians come for him again. Roper counters with a $50 million offer if Pine retrieves the manifest and delivers Roxana. Pine refuses, hands over a burner phone, and gives Roper until 8:00 a.m. to surrender.
As Pine drives away, Martin calls to warn him that he is being tailed. Roper has ordered the pursuing car to follow Pine back to Roxana. Pine manages to shake them at a gas station.
The Plot Widens
Elsewhere, Sally contacts the Supreme Court minister, who is traveling under military escort. She explains Gualteros’ shooting and recruits the minister’s help to head off the impending coup.
Teddy arrives at the shipyard and receives another call from Pine, urging him to meet so he can expose Roper’s betrayal. At the rendezvous, Teddy finds only a laptop. When he presses play, he hears Roper’s conversation with Langhorne outlining plans to double-cross him. Pine appears shortly after. Following a brief struggle, Teddy begins to believe Pine is telling the truth.
Violence and Escalation
Back at Roper’s house, a hidden microphone is discovered on the dog. Roper orders a full sweep of the property. Martin narrowly escapes under heavy gunfire as he flees in his car.
Teddy later brings Pine back to the shipyard and reveals the full scope of Roper’s plan involving an EMP device. The weapon is set to be flown in and detonated over Medellín during the peace celebrations. Pine insists he needs the flight details to divert the plane.
Enraged that the spy escaped, Roper returns home and, in a brutal display of rage and control, shoots the dogs before ordering an exhaustive search of the house. Roxana calls him shortly after.
Betrayal in London and a Final Threat
In London, a battered and broken Basil admits to Mayra that he spied on her because her activities seemed suspicious. He confesses he knows about the Colombian arrangement but insists again that he knows nothing about Pine’s plans. Mayra thanks him with chilling sarcasm for his “loyalty” and orders his execution.
Back inside Roper’s house, Teddy uncovers definitive proof of the EMP scheme, including the plane’s details, and sends the information to Pine. At the same time, Roxana arrives to meet Roper in person. He introduces himself and coolly threatens her life, demanding that she help him trap Jonathan Pine.
Roxana’s response is calm and devastating.
“Now I know his name.”
