“The Bear is Infected” opens in Ukraine, where two men force their way into an apartment occupied by a mother and daughter.
The bewildered women are placed on a couch.
Then a laptop is positioned in front of them.
Their purpose becomes clear when the episode moves back to Baltimore.
Kyle has begun interrogating Oleksandra Balakin. He understands that her intelligence training makes conventional interrogation difficult, so he attacks the one vulnerability that training cannot eliminate.
Family.
Kyle shows Oleksandra that American operatives are inside her mother’s home in Ukraine. He does not need to threaten Oleksandra directly. The implication of what could happen to her mother and sister is enough.
His strategy works.
Oleksandra Explains the Russian Playbook
Oleksandra immediately challenges the assumption that she considers herself Russian.
Russia is her enemy.
She explains that Russia has devastated Ukraine and that Americans fail to understand the monster created by the old Soviet Union. Being identified as Russian is the last thing she wants.
More importantly, Oleksandra offers an explanation for how Joe was exposed.
Russian intelligence suspected Joe and decided to test its theory.
The operatives who entered Joe’s home were a probe.
When Joe killed them, she confirmed their suspicions.
Cruz listens as Oleksandra explains the intelligence game. When Cruz tells Kyle that becoming a spy was never her objective, Kyle points out an uncomfortable truth.
She is playing the game anyway.

Two Cups and Randy are transporting Joe’s daughters to school when they detect suspicious activity on the Beltway.
They do not wait to determine whether the threat is genuine.

The team quickly removes the girls from the situation before anyone has the opportunity to make a move.

Joe Comes Face-to-Face with Oleksa
Oleksandra is transported under heavy guard to an underground garage.
Joe, Kyle, and Cruz take an elevator to meet her.

Strangers do not know enough about you to recognize the truth. The people closest to you do.

Russian operatives entered her home and threatened her family. She wants to know why.
Oleksandra maintains that the incident was circumstantial, but she offers Joe something more valuable.
Reveal that the CIA captured Yurimov and the entire Russian network will react.
The hornets will come out.
Oleksandra can identify them.

Elsewhere, Kaitlyn discusses the changing geopolitical landscape with her husband, Errol.
Their conversation turns toward the possibility that his position and influence could make him attractive to foreign intelligence services.
Errol distinguishes between the strategic approaches of Russia and China.
Russia approaches its competition with the United States through conflict and confrontation.
China thinks economically.

Oleksa produces a packet containing the names of Americans she believes have been compromised.

The Bear does not have to be defeated on the battlefield if it can be weakened from within.

Why is Oleksa’s list so dangerous?

Has Joe already been kidnapped?
